An Unreasonable Mod Concept
An Unreasonable Mod Concept

Deadliest Warrior meets Civilization Revolution and representation of factions from nearly every historical total war game But in Medieval 2 remastered engine(when it finally comes out), now if you read that and are still reading then I will go into unreasonable detail on the concept.

I mentioned representation from factions from nearly Every total war game and you might wonder what I mean by that and here is a short list of examples, the Apaches from medieval 2 the Egyptian‘s from Rome, the Trojans from Troy Rome from Rome 2 Saxons from barbarian invasion, holy Roman empire, from medieval 2 France from Napoleon. Now the first problem with putting all these factions in one game is massive technological disparity which classically is resolved in such games as Civilization Revolution by giving every faction the same starting tech level, Which Will Not Be How It Will Be Done! Starting technological disparity will be the hallmark of the mod, having Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Blackpowder factions existing simultaneously will add replayability and optional challenge. But I do not propose, technological stagnation, unless chosen as an option at the start of the game. The way a faction climbs the technological ladder is not through some boring ass tech tree, but by conquering civilizations that have the buildings with the technology you want. for example if the Apache faction captures enough cities with stables in them, then they unlock the stable building for themselves and unlock Calvalry. The more complicated, the technology, the more cities with that building you would need to capture. As another example if you’re factions greatest ranged infantry weapons is a matchlock rifle and you capture a single flintlock structure then that is all you need to increase the technology to matchlock, but if your greatest ranged infantry weapon is the javelin, then you need to conquer a substantial amount more to increase the technology. Which leads to technological bypasses such as a faction, overstepping crossbows to learning about blackpowder or skipping pass, bronze to learn about steel which has been seen an actual history. And to conclude the section, technological revision such as a black powder faction recruiting Malay infantry utilizing captured forges, for example Napoleonic France recruiting French hoplites from captured Hellenic Barricks.

As a point of “balance” I would have the more technologically advanced factions start off with less territory, and the less technologically advanced factions start off with more territory.

Armor would work much how it works in medieval 2 but on a larger gradient, starting off with “Stone Age armor” of bones, Bronze Age armor, Iron Age armor, steel plate armor. you could even have more variety, such as padded and chain mail, depending on the buildings in the city. if you have an armored building in your city, which is not native to your faction then it just costs more to upgrade your troops with that armor type. The armor would show up on the troop model as it does in medieval 2 leading to some funny results in some cases, such as hoplites wearing bones and wood musket men wearing chain mail and eagle warriors wearing steel plate, which is a part of the fun I think.

In the same vein as technology, religious buildings will act similarly, but perhaps on a faction to faction basis, for example, monotheistic cultures, such as Catholics orthodox, Hebrew, and Muslim cannot adopt new gods into the pantheon by capturing their temples, but polytheistic religions, such as Romano Hellenic, Hindu, Pagan, Egyptian and meso American Can. For example, if Rome captures three temples of Quetzalcoatl and holds them for 10 turns then they can start constructing temples to Quetzalcoatl anywhere in there in Empire Thus giving access to different benefits and perhaps unique units for polytheistic religions. monotheistic gods cannot be inducted into polytheistic religions, and causes greater unrest when spread and polytheistic territories and is harder to convert into polytheism.

Factional differences. Every faction should have unique mechanics and aesthetics for that faction. Rome should be able to construct the best roads. The Apache should be able to adapt technology faster the Aztec should be able to sacrifice their captives for temporary morale boost Etcetera and some factions. Should have multiple options on how to play them, like Rome for example Could act like it does in the original Rome divided into three gray houses that Conger than eventually civil War to capture the AI capital or like Rome 2 unified but can break into pieces. To add even more distinction between the factions, they should have unique agents such shogun factions having geisha’s, the act as diplomats and assassins, Medieval 2 factions having princesses that act as diplomats and give the ability to form alliances through marriage and stealing a factions general and bodyguard unit. There’s also the capacity for some new civilizations, not seen in total war, such as perhaps, since there is a lack of Stone Age, civilizations, the addition of Neanderthals, or other such things.

I think the most fundamental an important part of the mod is to give as many choices to the player at set up as possible, akin to dominions 5 if anyone’s ever played that. There could be a few different map options preset such as Europe, earth Etcetera with factions in set start locations, but primarily the maps will be randomly generated to add to the replay-ability. Particular Geographic features/locations such as the island of Crete with its famous archers mercenaries and Rhodes with its Colossus wonder or even the complete British Isle or Japanese archipelago. The player should also have the option to add in or take out whatever factions they want to be in the game at the start.

narratively speaking, if one needs such excuses for a game. Some great force or entity has extracted the civilizations across time and thrown them together to see the result, each faction believing it is the Will of their god or gods.

The only other note I would add is this is exclusionary of any fantasy elements from three kingdoms, or Troy not to mention the complete expulsion of Warhammer as to keep the theme consistent.
