Where do I begin

Hi, Im a graphic designer and would like to try my hand at skinning weapons.
Am I able to skin weapons and see them in my game before I share them, or how does it work?
Also is there a template I need to be working with? Where can i find this?

you could begin with downloading usable workshop mod.
checking pinned post that contain tutorial also recommended.
