And that ties into why there's almost no mods yet: it would be a lot of wasted effort if the game updates every two months and has yet to implement some core mechanics. Plus, small community because there's so little content in general.
Modding doesn't lend itself well to Early Access games, I think. Look at highly modded games like Skyrim & Zoo Tycoon 2: there might've been expansions but other than that, they were feature-complete upon release.
What do you mean with lackluster creatures tho? They're beautiful.. Or do you mean a low diversity of behaviour, a small roster...?
