Beginner Mapping Tips
A question for people who play custom maps:

Mapped a bit for other games but this is the first time I've tried making a VCD map. I've got a layout blocked out currently.

Are there any good tips on how to make a map that plays well? (i.e not frustrate the player too much) Particularly referring to placement of the various dispense units. To add to that are there any common problems found in custom maps that I can avoid.

Start small start vanilla
Good idea to unsub from mods to avoid content confusion
Disable gibs in dispensers is a plus
Avoid walking too far vs machines fire etc

Permanently disable steam cloud sync in steam global settings

or project fail to upload to workshop=
Delete all autosaves including backup autosaves=stupid cloud reinstall em=file upload failed
Get rid of the cloud n delete those again
Upload map= yay

Disable autosaves in editor and the game= goodbye 86gb autosaves folder
Autosaves are useless

Save manually often via save as
Press don't save if editor ask to save a file you didn't make n ya won't break da game

Editor crash when it feels like it=what else is new xd

Editor crash bug
Drag n drop mantis egg from actor class list crash editor

Are bsp brushes flickering like crazy
File switch renderer
Choose direct X 11 to fix that

Custom buckets crash editor and game out of video memory after Dev HitFix final update
Do not put custom buckets loose in map
Is fine to use as item in bucket machine

Landscape mode has broken heightmap collision hills eat trash mountains eat J harms
Use terrain instead

if swarm fails to build lighting
click the settings in the swarm window
will see a cache directory right at the top and the 1st letter is a drive letter that is set to D drive
if VCD is installed on C drive change the D to a C and rebuild the lighting/build all etc
that will fix the swarm agent for you:)


Geometry mode vs volumes
Select a volume change it's size n select another volume crash editor
Select a mash twice before select a volume no crashes

If change size of volume always rebuild the geometry or it old size not new size

No sound on PC if ya press play button it goes pop then PC sound died

Restart editor
Find speaker icon near pie button press that to enable realtime sound now sound won't break on ya

Backup project often incase ya corrupt it



Mymapinfo save setup none

Click blue arrow n choose vcsavegame setup

No it won't fail to load save games in the game


Do not press red emulate mobile feature button next to pie button in the editor that will crash editor= delete editor settings ini file to reset that n verify game cache if ya do press that by accident

Attach to actor kismet node not work client side so if you attach objects together
IE
Ya put wheels on a bin
Use hard attach code checkbox in actor settings esp if you say attach 300 interpactors together to make a train then train not turn into a huge ball of gibs client side in multiplayer xd


Stacking way too many boxes is a drag
So is welding too many bullet holes lightning scars etc

Try n keep map under 10000 total actors vs net actor saturation multiplayer server message
Ya don't want it to say it saturated on level loaded or multiplayer unplayable jank
Avoid saturated server txt

Bug in rustmk2 publish tool
Folder to upload fails to select folder to upload
Select folder to upload copy address at the top press cancel n paste address in content to upload box
Read publishing guide MK2

If you accidentally save a file you didn't make
Delete that file and verify the game cache to fix that
All vanilla files stay vanilla then ya won't screw up multiplayer


Slow n steady gets eotm awards take ya sweet time n don't burn out

It's easier than it looks just takes ages

yep play button always killed the sound on more than 6 computers each time i got a new pc it died
that realtime sound icon is a blessing so can finally setup sounds much better
not to mention that i use sound effects to time kismet events

Hmmm, from what I've read on comments and stuff. People prefer bright/ish maps, dark spaces are fine, just try to keep it to small areas and not the whole map, long long walks back and forth for stuff like buckets, bins, waste disposal can be a pain, fun/new interactive elements are always welcome if you can get into kismet stuff. LORE or world building is also be a huge plus, there's a lot of people who will notice how bodies are placed, where the blood splats come from and if you have notes/pda's or not to explain, even in vague detail, what's happened. Building a "viable" scenario, with the destruction placed as it would have unfolded will make look much better than just tossing in gibs and stuff wherever just for the sake of having something to clean.

You could also just think of the official maps you've played, or workshop ones for that matter, what did/didn't you like, what could be improved on, what was less fun, and use those thoughts to drive how you'd like to change that via your map/s.
