I know what you mean...That private traffic (and those bloody traffic-jams) is awful AI. If you use this mod the right way (so read the info and comments) no cars show up if you start a new game. I use it my self on every new map and place it second in my mod-list (right under the performance-mod). Now my streets are empty and only my own busses, trucks and trams drive through the cities of my map.

I appreciate it man, but i'm not looking to get rid of the cars entirely, I just want fewer people to use or prefer them. its a bit of a weird catch 22 where my trams are being held up by traffic and because my service is bad they're using their cars instead, even when I have 20 trams on a route.

If you want fewerpeople I suggest you could use the "Town Tuning Mod". With that mod you can set a maximum amount of people in towns and also what kind of cargo the towns need...Otherwise I don't know...
