A cry for help
I am trying to upload a cosmetic to tf2, just to see if i can kinda, but the damned texture file is kicking me in the nuts, it says currently that "Icon image does not fit inside the safe zone of 512X328." then tells me how the alpha must be black outside of the safe zone, but the whole alpha is black already, any tips or videos i can watch? ive spent 20 hours on this help me.

Get a job.

make sure you save the .tga at 32 bits/pixel, otherwise it won't save with the alpha layer attached.

Also take a black brush and paint around the outside of the safe zone. The importer is really sensitive and if there's just one tiny pixel anywhere, it will flag it.
Im suddenly getting a new issue after having to reinstall photoshop and all that to fix some errors, now it just says "Load failed" "Couldnt load (file directory)"

You might just have to restart the game.... the importer honestly really sucks. There's so many weird bugs. You can't even preview your items without it crashing ever since the latest patch.
yea ive noticed that, thank you, ill try it rn
Restarted my whole computer and tf2 3 times, same error, does it have to be in a specific directory? someone told me it has to be in tf/custom/tf/(myfile) so i did that before
Ted Beneke 324 9 Jun, 2024 @ 1:56am
it has to be in tf / workshop / import_source
if this works im marrying you btw
it didnt :steamsad:
same dang error
ive spent like 30 hours on this im loosing my marbles

for clarification, the compiled cosmetic item zips go in import_source.... you can also drag and drop them in TFMV to preview them which is helpful. The TF2 emporium discord has a lot of resource links for stuff like that, but you can google "tfmv download" or whatever and find it on steam community.

if you're just loading the model files (i assume that's what you're doing?) they dont have to be anywhere specific. I'm about to fall asleep so i can't rly help rn lol but if you join a workshop discord and ask around *usually* people are down to help. Unfortunately documentation on this stuff is next to non-existent
yea its late as crap for me too, thank you sm though this is about as close as ive gotten to getting it work, rn its just the backpack icon that isnt working so womp, night to you though

Goodnight bro I hope you figure it out

If it helps, I have some backpack icon templates here:

I also noticed that sometimes the import tool just doesn’t like backpack icons exported from certain programs lol.

Using an icon exported from photopea just won’t work at all. I have no idea why. Gimp and Photoshop work fine tho
