I actually discovered this method because of Cities: Skylines lol. I've had that since launch, and the workshop issues seemed to be the same here, so I tried the old 'interception' method like in Cities: Skylines, and it worked :)
The game doesn't lock the ws_Thumb file either, so you can overwrite it on the fly and so long as you don't press Update thumbnail again, it will say unlocked.
I'm really glad I didn't keep this to myself, lol. The workshop would be a pretty bland sight if I did, but I'm sure Luke will add the official option sometime in the near future :)
Until then this is the best (and only) method, and thank you again for turning it into a video :) I'll be adding a written version of this to various places in coming days.
