Ethics of Reuploading Mods
I've been thinking about this for a bit now, but we need a bigger discussion about reuploads.

Others and I have been pouring some old-school HL2 campaign mods recently.

But there's a user that I won't name who has brought up some ethical concerns about this.

(What if the original mod creator wants to upload the workshop but it's already there?)

(What if The "reuploader" is taking credit for it?) {which I've seen firsthand}

I made it a policy for me, If a Creator wants me to take down the reupload. I will oblige immediately.

But I'm not sure if this is enough.

All of us need to think if a mod is even worth uploading to the workshop because we might risk for the mod's original Creator being forgotten.

Also, credit the original creator. It's probably the best you can do if you want to reupload

Pretty ballsy to go around posting this after deleting my post calling you out for it.
The only correct policy is to get permission. If you dont get permission? Don't Reupload.
Unless the author is quite literally uncontactable(and you've tried anyway, and waited a reasonable amount of time), AND has been inactive for a long time, AND your version is actually gonna include fixes, you're basically just stealing other people's ♥♥♥♥, which is against steam ToS.

At the very least, if you're gonna reupload someone else's mod, put a TINY bit more effort than a single thumbnail.

@Cpt.Haxray

First, the reason why I deleted your comment is because I want to move the discussion here.

Second, I usually try to contact mod creators through ModDB messages or try to find public social media.

Third, I'm currently in the process of updating the workshop pages Mega City One and Deport. (plus restoring the opening of MCO)

Also, I am Working on porting a campaign that has many issues. (Pacifically, when you die you spawn in a noclip state)

I don't want to simply upload a mod and call it a day, I want to challenge myself to see if I can restore these mods properly.

Hopefully, why do next is satisfactory to the community.

Crediting them is enough. Your comment comes across as virtuel signaling.
This discussion just turned into an argument.

I have none besides writing who made it and when.
I care not if they like it being uploaded.

This reminds me of a guy who was always looking through the L4D2 workshop for items originally from gamemaps and leaving comments on the gamemaps pages telling them their work was "stolen" onto the workshop. Even though I don't think they got many, if any, responses to it. I guess he saw it as his duty, who knows.

But yeah, one tip for anyone who puts others' work on workshop purely for the simplicity of having it available as a subscription instead of local files - don't forget that hidden and private files exist. Nobody else but Steam admins can see them, nobody can get mad at you for uploading them.

I've already done this with some models and maps I haven't seen ported yet to workshop. The intent isn't to broadcast them to everyone, I only have them to easily turn them on and off at will, so I kept them private. Just something to keep in mind, depending on your reason for uploading something in the first place.

I usually check to see if there's any private stuff to remove, this is out of privacy for the mod creator.

Well, I do think you should get the permission from the original author for the reupload even with the fixes. After all it's their work they shared for free. And the fact it's available for free doesn't entitle you to reupload it left and right, unless the author specified otherwise. Have at least some respect for the mod makers as it takes quite a lot of time to make a mod and they don't get anything in exchange.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act

99% of all workshop mods are stolen pirated software.

people give a f*** on other persons work. can't contact is a cheap excuse.

those who are stealing from e.g. moddb or gamebanana must ask them. its their property too.
