How I think this would work is kinda like custom fuel tanks, new parts added to heat the water in the tank could be like this: you could use enclosed pipes to go into that tank, but on the other end, there will be new types of pipes called heating pipes or something. Put heated fluid into 1 end of the pipe, colder fluid will come out the other, the water (or other liquid/gas) will be heated.
I know this thread is a little old, but I decided to comment here because I seen it, and liked the idea.
Hopefully this gets added because this sounds great, Random Person :)

my idea was a "boiler" block that you can place, each block is a certain amount of water, then have a water input block and a steam output block that you can just freely place anywhere, thus you can build it to fit the inside of a creation, with the modding update this seems a lot more possible
