SO, what have you all learned while playing Cities Skylines. Useful tips
Here's a post I just made in response to another question someone had. Thought it might be useful to share it more generally...

I'll give you an example of what a vast difference, just the number of roads you have makes.
I've played on the same map I made for about 2-3 years now, tweaking and shaping it... Barely. It's an almost completely flat map where the main 25 tiles I use, is 99% flat and is mostly land with shore all around it.. Based on THE GREAT PLAN map by Mulleboy

I used to play normal with just the highway infrastructure in place and had a basic setup of progression for the whole game I kept replicating.
In the beginning of the game as I layed out streets, my pc would use about 10.5 - 11 gb of ram.
As I got further into the game, by the time I unlocked airports and/or had populations over I think? 75k, it would rise to about 12.9 gb of ram. And by then I was usually done playing about that level...

Then I decided to create the 2 main cities and 3 small areas I always built in almost exact detail, as part of the base map for the begging of the game to save time and aggravation on pc potato...

Instead of starting at about 11 gb, the game, without playing it for even a second would start at about 12.5 gb with ZERO population... By the time I reached the airports unlock with similar populations, it would still only rise to about 12.9 gb as before.

That means the road layouts alone were responsible for about 75% - 90% of the ram usage without even playing a seconds worth of gaming.

That was a heck of an eye opener that might be useful to alot of people.

Does anybody have advice about gameplay habits that might help people see where they can save resources or improve FPS in game simply by changing their habits in game?

All those nodes, I guess.

I think it goes both ways... I think whenever you have a "node" or "segment" for a surface that citizens or vehicles move along, it creates a new path or placeholder in the ram in order to do the calculations for their travel. Each node must save/dedicate a certain chunk of ram for future use. Otherwise my ram would have gone up much more dramatically as road/rail/metro/paths were used by increasing population.

I don't think it's as simple as it being a "node" itself because it's really just a virtual element with no physicality that would make that much of a difference especially when you consider the segments between nodes would take much more memory in order to render.

So the more roads, the more nodes, the more pre-dedicated ram it steals for itself for the future.

Pre-approved ram like my pre-approved credit card and both of them are getting me into trouble... lol

My pre-approved credit card must work better than yours. In fact, so much better I'll call mine an approved money card, as neither nodes nor segments get me into trouble.

Not using segments for water and electric helps, and with Algernon's More Path Units doubling what's available in vanilla, I can spend without limit on 64gb (though use does top out at 31.7gb). Fps is 25-35 on 100k pops

This game is hungry on resource, I do agree.

Thanks for trying to help but in the case of people that are hitting that wall before they use up path units, it's not a good solution. Those of us on potato brand pc's just have to live with the limitations of our pc's. Adding more path units does help if you have overhead with ram and cpu/gpu performance but the game is lagging anyway, because of the games limits...

So that is a good tip for people that can push the game to it's limits... But understanding things that the game does, that pushes our pc's to their limits is also useful to understand so we can tailor our behaviours to those limits. I would love to be at those kind of numbers... Our next computer will be something built specifically to play this game to it's limits. lol Soon I hope.

For this game, my PCSpecialist is potato, lol., though I confess its baked.

With 130 essential mods and 2k asset of which I use about a quarter on any one map, I play on the lowest settings and manage my nodes and very often release stuck vehicles with TMPE and run Broken Node Detector. Games runs slower when I don't.

I'm currently at 230k on 18 tiles, and a day takes 15 seconds at 30fps. By time I get 4 times that, fps will be sub 20 and a day will take 30 seconds. Then its time to start all over again.

I can't wait to play this on my 2026 pc. I'd have saved up enough by then, I hope.

I didn't think you were seeking help by the way, and I wasn't offering any. If you are seeking help however, perhaps try the gurus at General Discussions.
