OR, I don't understand what you mean and sharing some Steam screenshots will help a lot.
Use a large block Hinge, grind/remove the Hinge Head, go to Hinge block in control panel and click the "Add small head" button.
After that you will be able to add small on large :

DLCs are not needed at all to play the game so nothing important in DLCs.
Important to know :
-> the SE Devs told the community they want to keep working on the game as to make it better from Vote Feedbacks created by players in the Official SE Support Portal and will add all the important new blocks and all important new features for free every years.
Now that I know more about what you need = You will have to wait and maybe a kind SE Modder will see your discussion and post in saying they will make that new Mod.
OR
Find Kind Modders and post on their Workshop item page to ask if they would like to make that Mod for you.
Be mindful, however, that the small-grid, small ports only allow ores and small parts to pass through (i.e., computers, construction components, motors, ammo, etc.); large parts such as steel plates, metal grids, small and large tubes, oxygen and hydrogen bottles, etc., will not pass through, so a small-grid, small connector may be of limited use.
There used to be one, I don't know what happened to it, but I'll do some digging and see if it's still possible to reproduce that.
There's two that I know of that work for the older(non-inset) connectors.
"Small Connector Converter"
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3053654166&searchtext=small+connector+conver
and "Coupling Blocks"
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1719695354&searchtext=coupl
I use the latter because it does the same but with better aesthetics; the large grid connectors look like they should connect to both.
As far as item sizes vs conveyor size limits go, I created my own mod that lowers the size of all items so they can go thru small conveyors as well. It's essentially the same as a couple mods on the workshop, just updated for the latest update. I forgot the mod's name that I used, but there are a couple that pop up if you search.
