What file formats for 3D models are compatible with zomboid
I am trying to make a mod for firearms but the only tutorial I could find on how to do it is almost 3 years old and uses Blender 2.79. The problem addressed here is that the guy in the tutorial imports a DirectX model (a) directly from Zomboid to resize the model he uses (b), and then he exports the model he uses (b) as a DirectX model. However, I tried doing what he did on the current version of blender and the exact version he used, and the options for DirectX importing and exporting aren't there. Are DirectX files the only model I can use for Zomboid Items or are mods able to use other model formats?
And yes I know next to nothing about modding.

You can check the discord in the modding section and look through the pinned messages/ You can also use https://3d-convert.com/en/ to convert the .x files into fbx
Soooooo you're about to embark on the exact same journey I took at the beginning of this year, good luck :D

A very easy way to import Zomboid's .x files into the most recent version of Blender is to google for a x to fbx converter. Imagetostl is a good one for this.

Once you have the .x file converted into .fbx and in Blender, you'll have to remember that Zomboid uses their tool/weapon models at a 0.01 scale.

Hope this helps!

Will converting the file to fbx change the model scale at all?

Something strange happens in the conversion process that does mess with some of the model's stats. For example if you just use the converted .fbx it's going to be upside down and literally 100 times too big.

It's a simple fix though, flip it 180 on the Y-axis and either scale it down to 0.01 or when you export it, export it at 0.01 scale and voila, it works ingame.

I'm probably a dumb idiot who is bad at listening, but what should I do for models I need to put in a mod for the game? Is DirectX the only possible model to use in zomboid or does fbx also work?
fbx works just fine. Both my tools & blades mod and the guns & gun parts mod use .fbx files exclusively.

You'll also need to give them textures for them to show up. A model alone is an invisible item.
