Not sure if this is the place to ask such a question, but...

But recently, I've been thinking about setting up my own server, and I've found out that I can't find any good comprehensive guides as to how it is done - all guides I found were very general. For example, I've tried to follow one guide, ended up with some kind of an error and a server won't launch, but there was none in that guide about this error. So...

- Can anyone please suggest a general course of action, what do I need to do to establish a server?
- Can anyone please suggest some good guides, if any?
- Basically, if I've got an ordinary PC, I'll need to rent a hosting, I reckon? If so, maybe someone knows some good and reliable hosting servers?
- If I want to make my own balance and add mods, I take it it's better to first make my own server just for myself and test it without hosting, just so I can set up the balance and check the mods?
