Mod Request: Break Unit's Concealment
Could we please have a standalone (not an overhaul) mod created that provides a self-reveal ability? Preferrably as a new command that every unit has while concealed/shadowed.

Ability1: "Unconceal"
Icon: Same as "Phantom" but with an X overlaid
Cost: Free action
Condition: The unit is not a reaper and is concealed.
Result: Same as "ToggleIndividualConcealment" console command

Ability2: "Unshadow"
Icon: Same as "Shadow" but with an X overlaid
Cost: Free action
Condition: The unit is a repater and is concealed.
Result: Same as "ToggleIndividualConcealment" console command

That way the player can drop the unit's concealment/shadow status when and only when the player wants that unit to participate in overwatch traps. This would be realistic, as a real soldier wouldn't need to shake off a concealment status before being able to decide to participate, he'd simply make the decision in his mind and act accordingly. This mod would allow us to replicate that real example.

Once the squad has already been revealed, it can be quite hard to get a concealed unit to participate in overwatch traps when no self-revealing actions are available (breaking windows/doors) especially when in the heat of a pre-existing battle, where there might be no spare moves for such frivolous actions, as opposed to the leisure of waiting to trigger reinforcements on an empty map.

I'm looking for a 100% reliable way of dropping concealment/shadow (without an action point spent) so that I can put the unit into overwatch (unconcealed version) or activate a pod without spending any actions.

Don't worry if it wouldn't be compatible with overhauls. Please design it for the vanilla stealth system and leave it to the overhaul authors to introduce such a mod for their overhauls, so that this doesn't get bogged down by such a detail, please.

Thanks!

Not 100% what you want, but it's the mod I'm using for pretty much the same effect.

All units on concealed overwatch, something walks into firing range, all concealment is ignored and they start blasting away.

Just make sure any units you want to keep in concealment (Reapers & Rangers with Phantom perk) are NOT set to overwatch at the end of the turn. That way, they will stay hidden while the others are revealed.

@Dazzy_D: Thanks, I noticed that mod as well. Unfortunately, it's not what I'd like, just as you guessed. It's just creating another problem instead of solving the root cause. I don't want units in concealment that I want to remain there to not be able to go into overwatch, as that's a tactic to use when an enemy might path into the concealed unit and you only want to ambush it if it does. This wrong-fit mod takes away that tactic from our toolbox. The better fit is to get a mod that purely and simply breaks a given unit's concealment at-will. It's odd that no one has made one yet... No?

This is built in to some class mods, like the Proficiency class Reaper has a toggleable overwatch. You don't really need it for any class that doesn't have Phantom/Shadow perks. I don't know if it's possible to use that perk without using the class mod though.

@megansweden: Thanks, that's useful information!

I bet robojumper or Iridar would know if this standalone mod is doable, I wish there was a way to ping them to this thread.

If that is a simple ability, then you can set it to every classes.

You could probably enable the mod but edit its .ini to remove the Proficiency classes it adds, and its changes to vanilla classes, then add that ability to whichever classes you fancied. I think it would be do-able with just Notepad.

Thanks, but I'm not willing to take on the side effects that would come from butchering another mod with my edits, and corrupting a savegame(s). Knowing me, that's what I'd end up doing. I'd definitely prefer to wait and see if the standalone mod can gain traction.

I was asked to look at this thread, not sure why. If the question if a mod like that is possible, the answer is yes, it would be trivial. Similar effect can also be achieved by using the "ToggleIndividualConcealment" console command.

If I was called to make such a mod, then I'd have to decline out of principle, because if I start doing mod requests, that's all I'd be doing.

I suggest picking up modmaking tools and learning to do it yourself, that's how I started doing mods.

Thanks Iridar, simply clarifying if the concept itself is possible was all I was asking for, to clear up a claim that it isn't possible. Thanks!!

Apparently making this mod would be easy and simple. I looked into it and tried to get started, but I don't think doing mods in this game is for me, as it has a higher technical barrier than other games I've modded & I simply don't have the motivation. If anyone has the knowledge to knock this out in an hour - wheres it'd take me 12-24+ hours to accumulate the knowledge to get up and going - please do so and post a link to its new workshop page here, thanks!

I guess we'll never get this mod? (Same request was also made in May 2022.)
  • It seems like a good UX mod that's trivial for experienced modders to make.
    - It's proven to be trivial and doable here by an experienced modder's appraisal.
  • The request is well explained, so understanding the request should not be a barrier.
Yet no one will create it? What a shame.

I wish this mod also existed. If it is so trivial, why not just make it, out of principle lol? Gonna have to keep an eye open and wait for someone to make these trivial yet essential mods. We don't need just big overhauls or big QoL mods, having simple little tweaks like what this thread is asking is as good and necessary imo. :OhNoBlue: #depressed
Bee the bee you want to bee.
