The Demon Core was supposed to be the warhead for the third nuke we were building to use on Japan for WWII in the event that Japan didn't surrender. It is quite literally a sphere of plutonium. 14 pounds of plutonium. It gained its name after two criticality accidents at the Los Alamos Laboratory shortly after WWII ended. Both experiments were supposed to demonstrate how easily it could reach criticality with small tampers. (It actually reached criticality for a short moment). Two people died from radiation posioning. One of them dying 25 days after the incident due to him being so close the core, getting 200 Gamma Rad in just a few milliseconds. The safe limit for the human body YEARLY is 620 millirem. So roughly thirty-two thousand times the safe limit.
Sorry for the long winded reply, I just find the demon core so fascinating.
