What's the current workflow for extracting SCS archives on Linux?
Properly installed and configured SCS Extracted 2 1.55 sees only version.scs .

Both pure scs_extractor_1_55 and scs_extractor_1_50 downloaded from official wiki give

$ wine scs_extractor.exe base_cfg.scs
[hashfs] base_cfg.scs: Created, 1 entries
*** ERROR *** : Root directory not found, can not extract this archive!
[hashfs] base_cfg.scs: Unmounted.

BUT

$ wine scs_extractor.exe version.scs
[hashfs] version.scs: Created, 2 entries
[hashfs] version.scs: Unmounted.

Am I missing something - or tool maintainers are missing something?
Is ATS modding scene about to collapse to fiddling with version.sii only?

Some game asset files (".scs) has entries that protected by removing their directory entry headers. For example base_cfg.scs, locale.scs, etc. These protected entries can't extracted unless you know their exact path and file name.
I just want to fiddle a little with LOD distances of existing objects.
Am I supposed to make wild guesses for all .tobj file names AND paths in the game?
Or there are some more conventional means for doing so?
I believe back when 1.52 was a thing I could extract anything just fine.

Intended "access denied" is usually accompanied by an explanation, not by technical error.

base_cfg is not a file that is meant to be extracted.

All the LODs of objects, vehicles, models, buildings, etc, are stored inside the other 3 base: base.scs, base_share.scs and base_vehicles.scs. Extract all of these and import the model from them instead. base_cfg.scs is not meant to be extracted.

I promise to give it a try once I'll have time.
Current series of days off is over.
Thanks to all involved parties for attention. It could be solved by more player-friendly means - but we have what we have.
I'm not sure what you mean by player-friendly means, when all the answers are straightforward. Regardless, good luck to you too.

I think they're referring to the difficulty of getting to the files necessary to make changes, not the advice being given in the thread. ;)
Is that an attempt at unnecessary sarcasm from a responsible bearing this community's Officer insignia?
It didn't worked. Seen worse[forum.scssoft.com].

Oh, then you are, in fact, claiming that straight-forward answers are somehow "player unfriendly". Forgive me for giving you the benefit of the doubt.
Since I know very little about Linux, you can just get a Windows PC and make your modding for this game life a whole lot easier :-)

I have a very specific question: what's the current workflow for files extraction on Linux.
"base_cfg is not a file that is meant to be extracted."
or
"I think they're referring to the difficulty of getting to the files necessary to make changes, not the advice being given in the thread. ;)"
have nothing to do with that.

"The process is correct but you can't open files A, B, C, so focus on other .SCS files"
could be of value - but someone decided to focus on ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles.

I estimate your efforts to be at 0.4 Burkatovskis.
S. Burkatovski was SerB from Wargaming.net , just in case. Famous for his abrasiveness and lack of touch with community.

Yes, you were asking about workflow. But all the modders here immediately noticed that it's NOT a workflow problem, but you were trying to extract a .scs file that IS NOT MEANT TO BE extracted. So everyone before me told you that exact thing, and then you said you just want to change the LODs, which I joined in to provide additional information about which .scs files have to be extracted to do so. If you see this as not player-friendly, then I have nothing to say then.
