How to upload a skin?
I am sure I must be missing something in the process, but I downloaded the .obj file of the item from the Workshop in game, and I added a skin in a 3d program, and saved it as an .obj file. I can't figure out how to upload the file to the workshop?
In the Rust Workshop, I get the option to create the item and upload a texture, but no option to upload the .obj file?
Do we not upload the files as .obj? Do they need to be converted to a different format? What step am I missing?

you dont have to re-upload the OBJ... just assign your maps, give the item a name, and click 'publish'

It will help if we know what program you use. As every program as different exporting capabilities. What most people use is substance painter for texturing , But a lot more work goes into it than just texturing to stand any chance of approval for in game use. If you want some sweet tutorials on skin designing search up Ducks Workshop rust tutorials on YouTube , it should come up with his videos !

What do you mean by assign my maps?

by 'maps' I mean the various texture layers that you generated in your 3D program. As Ghost mentioned, Substance painter is basically the industry standard texturing software. You can follow Duck's series.. here's the link specifically to the uploading step

Interesting videos, but yeah, I don't have those programs, nor can I afford them. I don't know how to make maps of the skinned object, and I don't understand why they would make it easy to download an .obj file, but not let us upload the same type of file.

Because object files themselves cannot be altered. The game is compiled of thousands of objects and if we were able to change them it would entirely be a new.. game..? But they allow us to upload our own maps and textures so we can still have some creative say into the game.

Hmm, I wonder if I can supply the file to someone to help me make map textures of it? I've got the skinned object also in a .3mf format, not sure if that will help?

Aren’t 3mf files for 3D printing?
