Z saber is based on Zero being X'es friend, while Z Saber Virus is centered around the bad end route of X 5 when Zero becomes "Awakened", doubling his power but destroying his morality.
the Z saber by itself promotes strong morals, and defending the innocent, while it's viral counterpart represents unbridled power and fury going dangerously unchecked.
