I have the same issue with some items, but you shouldn't change it. Read the developer's site by clicking the workshop for rust, then learn more, but here is a direct link.
https://wiki.facepunch.com/rust/Creating_Skins
And the words state, "We politely ask that you keep your thumbnail as the default generated thumbnail, but ultimately we're unable to enforce this."
So I wouldn't do it, and no one cares about the thumbnail. People click the item by their voting queue, which is randomly generated for them, or some may look in the workshop in the game section, but thumbnails don't matter as long as you can see the skin on the item.
Some people load the skins in the Rust Workshop in the game it self and can see them that way too.
I've created 700 skins so far, and some of my thumbnails aren't right. It sucks, but since people can see the name, they will click it if they like the name, or they will see it when their voting queue sends them that way, or when they click Rust Workshop and see new skins made by clicking most recent.
My wolf skins got a bad thumbnail and a few others.
