Sci-Fi total conversion mod
As of this point in time this is only a theory. Read on.

I will start by saying that I love the realism of combat in RO2, especially compared to some other games, but recently I have started desiring a science fiction game with the same level of realism and size, however I have yet to find anything that fills that description.

SO!

I want to create a total conversion mod that would allow people to play in some sort of sci-fi setting while keeping the same combat system and general feel of combat. Right now I am tossing around some ideas for a theme, from creating a whole new sci-fi "universe" to basing it off of more well-known science fiction such as Warhammer 40K. Another idea is to make something set loosely in the near future, Deus Ex: Machina style. Again, all ideas that I have for themes and by no means set in stone.

It is important to me that I create a mod that people actually want to see, so please give me your ideas, opinions, criticisms, and advice for all aspects of this mod.

Along those lines, if interest is expressed by the community I will make sub-topics to discuss seperate ideas in more detail.

There are several important concepts related to doing this and I am creating separate forums for each one, but I will give a quick run-down of each now.

Of course, one of the topics will be the theme as the entire mod will be based off of this and this will need to be decided upon before any real progress can be made on the mod itself. That being said, I want to discuss this thoroughly as possible and look forward to everyone's opinions and ideas.

The most important part of the mod itself would be the combat system, and how to modify the current one to fit with the sci-fi theme. The biggest problem that I can think of is how visibility will be affected seeing how lasers/beam/plasma type weapons are a very common theme in science fiction weaponry. Another struggle that I've had is whether or not to implement body armor, since I personally enjoy the lack of body armor in the base game. This and much more can be discussed in the thread I will be creating soon.

A second important concept would be how maps would be designed, including how the advanced technology would affect architecture and city/countryside layouts.

An important aspect that I for think will be rather enjoyable is weapon design and balancing between whatever two factions are created. This ties directly in with the combat system so the essential pieces of the combat system as well as the theme would have to be worked out before this stage could take place.

The biggest problem that I have at the moment, besides free time, is that I have no modding experience. So, if anyone would like to help me with any aspect of the game I would be very happy to work with you. The other problem, time, is because of school. However, I will stay active and communicative. Around May I should be able to start putting more serious work into it.

My skillset include programming, organization, and a basic knowledge of 3D modelling and design. Anyone who thinks they can contribute anything to the construction of this mod will be welcomed with open arms.

I eagerly await the opinions and advice of anyone who is interested. Let me know what you think of the general idea or of specific points in the comments below or in one of the other threads.

I like the idea of the mod, I just don't know how difficult it would be to do. I'm currently picturing something like Star Wars Battlefront - large open maps with laser rifles

Star Wars is your best bet. It'll attract a lot of players and has established canon to work with

Greetings Herr Slim! I am very interested in your concept currently. I am also looking to make a mod for RO2, and it to be sci-fi. This game is excellent, but mods can always make a game better.
