map making and scenarios
Hi all, I am keen to start making some maps for multiplayer games and I was wondering if there are any guides to using the editor anywhere?

It took me over 2 hours to work out the only image format accepted by the map image import is targa 24 bit with alpha (even though the alpha seems to do nothing) but I am still puzzled as to how it represents pixel information versus map information. There seems to be no correlation between colour and height in the terrain after import. Best I can do is black and white, white for sea and black for land.

I am attempting to bring in a greyscale DEM file of the British Isles, but alas all I get is two smudges. I have tried reduced palettes, grey scale, inverted and all I ever get is smudges. When I use the editor to paint the brush tends to jump around a bit instead of painting where I click so I really need some good info on the import. Things like if it is a specific palette, what does each colour represent? What size image for what size map etc. etc.

Can anyone provide example images for map importation - or better, would the devs stick some in the scenarios examples folder?

Would love to start making things but it is difficult to finds support for this EX version.

Hey Sykoste,

I'm not a developer, but I've been part of the Scenario Multiplayer community on RoN for over 5 years, so let me try to answer some of your questions

As far as guides... try this link from RonHeaven that might be helpful for the API that the Script Editor uses http://ron.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=818

As far as the .tga files go, yea, you need white to be water and black to be land (it just has to....). It won't detect terrain height differences, just generic land and water. Make sure (for best results) to make the image the same pixel size as the size of the map you want to import to (so like Arena is like 200x00 I believe, for example).

As far as the DEM files, I've not worked with those, so I can't tell you much about those. I mostly use TGA to get my map outlines.

Here's a example image for a.tga

thanx pimp - so the tga file does not differentiate any further between black and white? Seems a shame that there is height information that cannot be manipulated other than manually. If the land uses only black and white am I right in thinking the other palette colours are used for terrain elements then? If so - who has this palette information? (by terrain I mean mountains, rivers etc.)

It would be far easier if we could just input an existing map then output it as targa - to see how it is done!
