Normal Maps
I was wonder how other people make their normal maps. I want to learn a few different methods besides the old pirated software I used... Ive tried Nvidia's plugin for photoshop but don't really like it. What do you guys use?

I make a displacement map in photoshop and convert it using ShaderMap2.

First, I bake a normalmap from a hipoly model -> lowpoly cage. Then, I generate another normalmap from the diffuse texture, using https://code.google.com/p/gimp-normalmap/ , in Gimp, manually tweaking the channels as necessary (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Normal_Map_Creation_in_The_GIMP). Then, I manually carve out a specular map on both of my normal maps (baked + generated), and merge these together in Gimp.

It isnt a horrible choice, its just a lot less polished than photoshop IMO

It's every bit as useful as Photoshop for texture generation ; not as useful for image manipulation or painting. And a hell of a lot less polished. I didn't just leap into Gimp because it was free ; it suited my needs. Know your tools.
