You've broken all the tapers, and in desperation, you consider taking a torch from the nearby landing. The sconce moves, revealing a secret passage, and inside is a dusty, forgotten room. Arcane symbols, old relics, books, and... thankfully, some large, black candles rest on an altar inside. You gather the heavy candles and head upstairs.
When you light the first candle, a cloud of black smoke swirls out and a purple-skinned demon appears. All the scribes flee screaming and, as you follow, a force pulls you from your feet. The great doors slam shut, leaving you alone with the beast.
Long story short, villian monologue: The old court wizard imprisoned an evil Djinn or 'genie' and now he's loose. Suddenly, a book falls off a shelf and there's a gasp. It seems the princess (or prince if playing as female) was sneaking around reading sappy romance novels.
The beast grabs them and leaps into a heroic, fantasy novel and disappears. As the magic glowing trail begins to fade, you bravely leap into the book after them. Turns out the book is about a brave knight questing to save a kidnapped princess (or prince) and you end up filling the part of the hero of the story and all the people in the land treat you like a real knight.
It's pretty crazy. Puh-ritty... cray-zee.
Oh, but before you can do all that, you actually go into the character creator and you choose what you look like. You add your body, skin tone, clothing, and hair. Then you create the princess, or prince. Then, you actually get to design the nemesis. Giving them claws, or wings, even a demon tail if you want.
I haven't actually gotten past the character creation part yet, because this 'game' makes it so easy and fun to make the sprites and characters that I've just spent hundreds of hours playing with all the tools. So there's a slight, tiny chance I might be wrong about all that other stuff.
