Mods are there, but are locked or need skulls?

When I play with mods, they often need a large number of skulls to unlock and / or are greyed out on my spellbook. As Mods dont allow me to save, do i need to play through each time to earn skulls to then try the mods out? Anybody?

Try playing through the entire game without mods so you have all the traps unlocked and plenty of skulls to spend. I know it's not the best option, but it's really the only one. Sorry :(
