Though what I would do if I had a raycast guided weapon (since I write scripts) would be to continue forward if the raycast returns smoke as a target. That would make smoke fairly useless against a camera.
Either way, its still a pile of things for the game engine to keep track. If I were a server admin I wouldn't like any of it. Bad for game performance.
This is why a dedicated solution would possibly be better performancewise. And more visually plesant.
And in terms of it being useless if the vehicle would remain in the same position than yes. A simple solution like that in the missile script would counter that. But all it would take is for the vehicle to manuver. You could also use it as chaff as you said and force aircraft to sharply turn while evading to possibly breake missiles lock. And if there wasn't a launch vehicle in range to guide the missile back on target I don't think it could guide itself back with just the raycast as you just wouldn't know where to send the next ray to search for the target.
IMO = The Modder will have to change the turrets behavior too,
This is why I specifically asked about blocking camera raycast and not turrets. I also explained how that could be useful IMO.
= They will tell you if something similar can be done.
