I've had a similar problem, though I don't remember how I ended up fixing it exactly. Obligatory first step just in case you haven't tried validating the files first - Right click the game in your library, go to Properties... -> Installed Files -> Verify integrity of game files. Assuming that doesn't work:

Since you mentioned a new monitor, it could be something to do with the resolution or other graphics settings, maybe - try navigating to /Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Age of Mythology/Users/ and find [Your Profile Name].prf

Move that file onto your desktop or somewhere else you won't lose it, and try launching the game, and if it asks you to sync with Steam Cloud, refuse it/use the local version. That should reset the graphics options to default and maybe fix the issue - though it will also reset any other options linked to your in-game profile.

If that doesn't fix it, move your .prf back into the place you removed it from and follow the same steps - this part likely won't get the game working but you might as well get your settings back if removing them didn't help - and I'll try to think of something else.

I figured it out shortly after posting this. I came across a video that said to press alt enter as soon as you hit play which opens it in window mode.

I was curious since I got a brand new monitor I changed the resolution to match my monitors and now it works normally.
