The year is 1934, October specifically, and the balance of power in Europe, stable for over a decade, has begun to shift anew, with Asturias gripped by a Communist revolution. In 1915, the Italian Empire made a fateful decision to join the central powers in their war against the entente. The slaughter of millions followed, with a peace treaty favourable to the central powers being signed in a train carriage in Milan in 1919. Italy secured Mare Nostrum, gaining Gibraltar, The Suez, Western Egypt and French possessions in Algeria and Morocco. In addition, all of Southern France up to the eastern bank of the Rhone was occupied. However, a Pyrrhic victory in the war to end all wars was not sufficient to save the crumbling German and Austro-Hungarian Empires. The Sartacist revolution of late 1920 succeeded, as did a counter-coup by the Freikorps in early 1921., while Austrian designs in the Balkans were burned by the fires of nationalism in Hungary, Galicia and Bohemia. A reactionary revolution in France quickly followed suit. In the next decade, further Italian expansion was achieved in the Balkans, with friendly governments being established in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the never-realised Kingdom of Croats, Serbs and Slovenes, Albania, Turkey and Greece. Only Great Britain stands as a bastion of democracy just off the continent, having been humiliatingly forced out of Ireland in 1922 and lost many of its middle eastern possessions to an Italian Transjordanian Governate.
