Step Sowers are probably the best way for base building, since the walls are easely destroyed, if you misplaced them or want a different layout. They're also a great way to avoid death, since they can block enemy pathfinding.

There are other ways to place walls as well. No easy way to place doors, though. You could imbue a door with life, use Proselytize to make it your follower and then just tell your new door-buddy to stay put where you want a door to be.
