Description
WappenWiki Flags For Europa Universalis IV is a flag mod which replaces the flags of most of European Christendom as well as nearby Islamic polities with versions that are higher quality, higher resolution, more historically accurate, and which hold a consistent visual style.

Features

Historical Accuracy
WappenWiki Flags endeavors to maintain historical accuracy, attempting to utilise heraldic devices which are generally accepted to have been in use on November 11, 1444 or as close to this date as possible. Note that once outside of Europe, historical accuracy is very difficuly to maintain due to a lack of historical documentation (or translations/digitisations thereof), and thus, out of necessity, it is not quite as stressed, although it will still be attempted.

Consistent Bases
WappenWiki Flags preferences the usage of coats of arms over the usage of flags, banners, or standards. It will only resort to the latter in case of the lack of the former. This means no jarring alternation between flags and coats of arms for arbitrary reasons. The mod also aims to maintain a consistent visual style. This means that colours will be homogeneous, artstyles between flags will be similar, and levels of shading and texturing will remain uniform. Overall, flags attempt to look as if they were created for the game, rather than looking like a mixed bag of items from various sources.

High Quality Standards
WappenWiki Flags only uses images which are of professional quality. No JPEG compression artifacts, random noise, inept artistry, or other such defects will be tolerated. Additionally, images provided are at a higher resolution than the base game (256x256 rather than 128x128). This does help eliminate some of the blur that the base flags suffer due to low resolution, but it still persists in some cases. I have tried increasing the resolution further, but it either did not help or, in some cases, resulted in making things worse.

Support for Both Banner and Shield Shapes
By default, WappenWiki Flags uses images which fit the base game's shield shape. However, through the use of the "Banner Edits" addon, it also provides variant flags for those who utilise mods that change the default shape to a banner shape.

Ironman Compatible
WappenWiki Flags does not edit the checksum, as it only changes flags. This means that achievements can be earned while using this mod.

FAQ

Can I use WappenWiki Flags with other flag mods?
As long as they do not replace the same flags, yes. If they do replace the same flags, then it depends upon which mod you wish to be overwriting the other. The order in which Europa Universalis IV loads mods without being given instructions is completely indecipherable to me. Thus, to ensure that the game displays the flags from the mod you prefer, you'll need to do a little edit:

To have WappenWiki Flags overwrite another mod, open the WappenWiki Flags' .mod file¹ found in your Users\Username\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\mod\ folder. It's just a text file with a fancy file extension, so if you get asked what program to use, just tell it to use Notepad or an equivalent text editor. At the end of the file, add this line:

dependencies = { "Name of Mod You Wish to Overwrite" }

Save the file, and now the other mod will be overwritten by WappenWiki Flags.

To have another mod overwrite WappenWiki Flags, open its corresponding .mod file and add this line instead:

dependencies = { "WappenWiki Flags For Europa Universalis IV" }

Once again, save the file, and WappenWiki Flags will then be overwritten instead. Note that the .mod files will be reset whenever the mod creator releases an update, so you'll need to redo the edit if that does occur.

¹As of EU4 version 1.29, the name of the .mod file is changed to a seemingly random string of numbers. You'll just have to guess which file it is in the mod folder, as I don't know what it gets renamed to or if it even is consistent. Alternatively, you can download the mirror of the mod linked below. The first line of the file will include the mod's name.

Do you intend to continue adding flags to this mod?
I consider the mod to be more or less complete. My main source material, WappenWiki, only covers Christian Europe, as coats of arms are a tradition of Western civilisation, so any additional flags either require me to make them myself or require searching down and then editing to match the style of WappenWiki. Even then, it's very difficult to find any flags of reputable source for Islamic dynasties. In fact, most of the ones I've provided are dubious at best. Thus, while the potential for an additional flag or two is there, there likely will not be any major expansions. Any updates that do occur will most likely be simple refinements.

Why is X country part of Y group in the preview images?
The preview images are sorted into groups for my own sanity in managing the mod. The groups are based upon EU4's own geographical regions, with some changes. I mean no offence by their groupings and apologise for any caused.

How can I customise the mod?
As of Europa Universalis 1.29, the Steam Workshop download no longer includes user-accessible files. As such, I've provided a download mirror here: Main Mod[drive.google.com] and Banners Addon.[drive.google.com] A collection of my base flag images can be found here.[drive.google.com] I don't know if or when I'll get around to uploading the remainder, as I need to go through and fix my horrid naming conventions first, so if there is a particular nation that you want, please ask in the comments.

Ah, thanks brother, that works. I needed that design in a svg.

It's definitely a different coat of arms that I've simply employed for Dithmarschen. It's been years since I've worked on this mod, and I do not remember which one precisely, nor can I even be sure that the original image still exists on Wappenwiki. In my brief search, I did comes across this coat of arms which is similar, though: https://wappenwiki.org/index.php/File:Fouskarnaki.svg

Where did you get the coat of arms of Dithmarschen (Virgin Mary)? I can't find an entry on Dithmarschen in wappenwiki. Perhaps it's from a different country? I'd like to know because I can't seem to find it anywhere on the internet.

Love this mod. Making the flags respect that 80% off the time we see them as shields/coats of arms make a huge difference in quality.

Great mod! Love the high res coat of arms!

Thanks for the answers. That's fair, although the uniformity of eagles used across all of Southeastern Europe just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, it's a shame that they haven't been customized to fit each nation better. But nonetheless, the majority of the other flags are great and it's easy to just swap out any individual flags someone (in this case, me) doesn't like.

Serbia uses the coat of arms of the House of Lazarević, [commons.wikimedia.org] which ruled Moravian Serbia and later the Serbian Despotate from 1371 to 1427. The House of Branković inherited the despotate in 1427 and was in power in 1444, so it would make sense to use the variant arms they employed [commons.wikimedia.org] as sovereign of Serbia. However, WappenWiki does not have these variant arms.

In 1444, Zeta (what EU4 calls Montenegro) was Serbian crown land. In 1451, it became an independent polity under the House of Crnojević and uses their coat of arms. [en.wikipedia.org]

Albania uses the coat of arms of the House of Kastrioti, [commons.wikimedia.org] which Skanderbeg, leader of the League of Lezhë in 1444, was a member of.

Bosnia uses the coat of arms of the House of Kotromanić, rulers of the kingdom of Bosnia. The design of the coat of arms itself is known from coins minted [en.wikipedia.org] in the late 14th century by the first king of Bosnia, Stephen Tvrtko I. However, contemporary tinctures are unknown. The red tincture employed by the mod originates from coats of arms attributed to the House of Kotromanić under the Kingdom of Hungary in armorials compiled during the Council of Constance, which was held from 1414-1418. The first known use of a blue field for the arms of the House of Kotromanić originated within the Korjenić-Neorić Armorial of the late 16th century. This was a copy of the lost Ohmučević Armorial, itself being highly dubious due to its composition of primarily fictional coats of arms, with a limited number of authentic ones.
