Orbis Aquarum - Realistic Campaign Water

Description

INTRO
Tired of seeing the same old and frankly... weird-looking water on the big campaign maps for Total War: ROME II (Grand Campaign, Imperator Augustus, Empire Divided)? Want something better that actually differentiates the visual styles based on how real-world oceans look? Have you always hated how the original game's rivers & lakes turn white for some reason and also are hard to spot because of that?

Then look no further! This mod - best paired with Celticus' amazing Orbis Terrarum II mod - will solve all of the above for you.

ABOUT - Orbis Aquarum
Orbis Aquarum is a complementary mod I made for Celticus' Orbis Terrarum II with the sole aim of reskinning the big campaign map's water textures so that they have some variety from ocean to ocean while also maintaining a realistic appearance that fits the scale of the campaign's visual design. I noticed that the oceans in all of the other DLC campaigns for ROME II (e.g. Wrath of Sparta) had way better looking water for some reason, and I realised why. Basically, each campaign has different water colour textures which are multiplied over a blank coloured (i.e. white) bunch of water textures for oceans, rivers and lakes. I basically hand-painted these water colour textures to match more closely to the DLC campaign's style of water while also adding in a bit of variety based on which ocean you're looking at. For example, if you are near the Atlantic ocean, you get a more darker, navy blue-ish style when compared to the Mediterranean's brighter, blue-turquoise-ish style. Also, deep/hazardous areas will be clearly shown as a deeper blue compared to the more shallow/safe areas.

COMPATIBILITY
This mod was designed for compatibility in mind and is therefore compatible with all overhaul mods (e.g. Divide et Impera). And yes, it is save compatible - you can enable / disable it whenever you want as it only replaces the Grand Campaign's water textures and nothing major.

THANK YOU
Special thanks to:
  • Celticus - For helping critique my repainting efforts to match the best way it can to his Orbis Terrarum II mod.

And finally, thank you for reading and (hopefully) rating + subscribing! I put a lot of my free time into this, and am glad it's finally done for all of you to enjoy.

Apparently this doesnt work for the add-on Wrath of Sparta.

I can confirm it works still as long as you load both mods correctly

Works fine for me , it's possible you have another mod also changing water?

Got this mod set before orbis terrarum, but I don't think it's working. From the pictures and video, it looks like the sea should be a lighter blue, but mine still looks the same darker color

Suffice it to say, this is the most "realistic" you're going to get while still being aesthetically pleasing to fit the simplified shader (i.e. only allowed one colour hue, when in reality water can look really different dependent on multiple factors) + match the abstract scale at which the campaign map's visual design is made at (i.e. the campaign map visuals are not 1:1 scale "realistic" either; you have characters + buildings + ground textures that would not be visible from space. So, if things depicted in the campaign were truly at the scale that they were in reality, the colour of the water would also fit) + be informative to the player so they can clearly see which areas are safe or not.

Yes, that image shows a transition of shallow to deep; green-ish hue is where it's shallow (for coasts / shallow areas or non-hazardous areas around the center of the map), the deeper blue distance is where it deepens (which I placed when water is either not close to land masses or when the water is hazardous to fleets). There are many other examples I used, not just this one. I highly doubt that one example image I provided has been Photoshopped, and if it has been then it's very light editing (e.g. brightness adjustments).

Another complication is how difficult it is to trust imagery from the internet. You never know if someone retouched it with colorization. While an organization like NASA has good reasons to retouch space photos, the reasons images down here on earth gets retouched is so they can look more pretty; not usually (probably rarely?) to look more realistic.

That shutterstock image is visibly shallow, you can see the seabed. Impressions will always just be opinions but if you base it on imagery of shallow waters for example that will of course be reflected in the final result (sorry the pun).
