UTHI YS Series

YS84 - Originally meant to be a yard switcher, the YS84 was built with 800hp. Though UTHI had begun production expecting the YS84 to be their primary yard switcher model, it was requisitioned and produced less than the YS124 and the YR series. It did, however, fill a great share of industrial yard switching roles, as well as pulling some light passenger trains with a steam generator filling the otherwise empty space ahead of the prime mover. The YS84 and its rebuild model, the YS114R1, could be ordered with a large battery pack ahead of the prime mover, allowing it to run entirely off of electric power and its prime mover able to be remotely started and stopped, allowing it to act as a quite flexible "calf" in a multiple unit arrangement.
YS124 - As alluded to above, UTHI thought the YS124 would be a secondary yard switcher model, but it soon surpassed the YS84 in production numbers. Yard crews preferred the 1200hp over the 800hp. This was due, in part, to the YR series being more expensive. The rebuild model, the LR154R1, was redesignated a "light roadswitcher," as a fair number of YS124s ended up serving such a role in shortline service.
