NKP GP30 Pack

Description
geep

Shortly after dieselization, which had happened just a few years prior, the Nickel Plate Road was looking for some 4-axle mainline power. They decided on the EMD GP30. 10 of these were delivered, with 901 being delivered in November of 1962. The 10 units, which were the first low-hood locomotives on the Nickel Plate, were numbered 900-909 and served across the NKP system until the N&W merger in 1964. N&W renumbered them by adding a 2 to the front of the previous number, so they became 2900-2909. The engines survived on N&W for several years and even lasted into the NS era, until they started to be retired as better power appeared.

As of 2024, there are technically 6 NKP GP30s left, and surprisingly most are operational. Engines 904 and 909 were sold to BNSF and got rebuilt into GP39s (I don't personally count them as GP30s anymore but they do exist), and are still operational today. 901 went to the Indiana & Ohio Railway (IORY) in 1986 and was later sold to the Cincinnati Railway Company (CRC) for use on the Lebanon Mason & Monroe Railroad. Its sister 902 was purchased by the Great Miami Shortline Railroad, and was bought also by CRC in 2012 for use on the Cincinnati Dinner Train. Finally, 900 went to the Mad River & Nickel Plate Railroad Museum and is currently on static display.

TO DO:
Add light option for nose light
Add modern spec 901 and 902 with ditch lights and K5LA

Big thanks from me here. I live in the Cincinnati area and frequently visit the 2 NKP GP30s in the area. Fantastic job on the models. Absolutely spot on!
