Regular slaughter time is a half an hour question of "can you kill the hunter and marine gudgeons?". If you can, you win, and the rest of the stage is padding. This custom stage does not last 9 years like base slaughter time and switches out the enemy types, which fixes this problem.
The minecraft checkpoint doesn't have much of a throughline beyond "don't get near creepers", and the HL1 checkpoint mostly lacks threatening enemies. The HL2 checkpoint is where the stage actually becomes difficult. If you aren't a CQC character, it is a test of how efficiently you can use the SMGs the combine soldiers drop, otherwise it is managing your tac bar against an endless tide of gun enemies. All things considered, this sort of challenge isn't present outside the nexus core facility and hard sell in the base game, so it is interesting.
