DESCRIPTION

Locomotive 01 118 is one of the most iconic and best-preserved examples of Germany’s legendary Class 01 express locomotives. Built in 1934 by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel, it was designed as part of the standard locomotive program ("Einheitslokomotiven") of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. These powerful "Pacific"-type engines (wheel arrangement 4-6-2) were the backbone of long-distance express passenger services in Germany for decades.
With large driving wheels (2,000 mm) and a top speed of 130 km/h, 01 118 was built for speed and reliability. It was equipped with a 2’2’ T34 tender, allowing it to carry 34 cubic meters of water and 10 tons of coal, enabling long runs between stops. The locomotive weighed over 100 tons and could produce around 2,000 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful steam engines of its time.
During its working life, 01 118 served on prestigious express routes, pulling heavy passenger trains at high speeds across the German railway network. After World War II, it continued to run under the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) in West Germany. Unlike many of its sisters, 01 118 retained its original streamlined Wagner smoke deflectors, giving it a distinctive and elegant appearance.
After its retirement from regular service in the early 1970s, 01 118 was preserved and restored to operational condition. It became a beloved museum and excursion locomotive, owned by Historische Eisenbahn Frankfurt. Fully operational and meticulously maintained, it has remained a crowd favorite, often seen hauling vintage trains on special trips and railway festivals.
