@busy, 9 year old should do hte research but they don't. I've done it all for them, thanks to Wikipedia. Sure not the most credible but still works. Now then, this is how Wikipedia defines it, and, if you have problems with my source, do the research yourself:
"A submachine gun (SMG) is an air-cooled, magazine-fed, automatic carbine designed to fire pistol cartridges. The term "submachine gun" was coined by John T. Thompson, the inventor of the Thompson submachine."

Notice all of these kids complaining about how none of the guns are smgs even though all of them are. Nine year olds.
