EdB Prepare Carefully

Description
Customize your RimWorld colonists, choose your gear and prepare carefully for your crash landing! Use the optional point limits to try to create a balanced start or keep points disabled to build the starting group that you always wanted to try. Save your setup as a preset so that you can start your game the same way later.

1.6.2 Released (3 August 2025)
A new release for RimWorld 1.6 and the Odyssey expansion is now available.

This release includes a couple of bug fixes, some better error checking that may avoid some compatibility issues with other mods, and one or two other changes.

We've seen the discussion about people having trouble getting the update automatically from Steam. The problem doesn't seem to be in our control--it works for some people and doesn't work for other people. We're hoping that just releasing a new version may fix the problem, but please keep giving us feedback. Unsubscribe/subscribe is still the best advice we have for this problem, unfortunately.

We're keeping an eye of discussion about compatibility with other mods. Please keep giving feedback on that. If you suspect that a specific mod is causing the problem, please try that mod alone with Prepare Carefully/Harmony and see it works. Sometimes it's not the mod you think.

Will the mod be updated to 1.6?
Yes. The mod is now available for 1.6. Even though the mod is not really in active development anymore, we do try to update it when new versions of the game are released. We'll make it work with the new version, try to make it compatible with as many other mods as we can, and then we'll go back into hibernation until the next version comes out.

Why doesn't the "Prepare Carefully" button appear for me?
First and foremost, make sure that you've enabled the mod. This will be obvious to experienced mod users, but if you're new to RimWorld mods, you need to go into the Mods menu when you start the game and explicitly enable a mod after you've subscribed to it.

If you've got dozens of other mods installed, it can be difficult to know what's causing this. Sometimes, an error while loading another mod that is before Prepare Carefully in the mod order causes Prepare Carefully not to load properly. In other cases, I have heard that some people have success with uninstalling and then reinstalling the game, but it's difficult for me to recommend that approach. Posting the game's log file somewhere (if you know how to do that) can help, but only do so if this if you've pared down the number of mods you're using to a minimum.

When I click the Prepare Carefully button, it doesn't do anything or I get an error message. Why doesn't it work?
This usually happens because another mod is doing something that Prepare Carefully does not expect, and it causes an error. It's impossible to test with every mod out there, so issues like this are inevitable. However, we do try to continue to improve the error handling in the mod to try to avoid them.

Where should I put Prepare Carefully in my mod load order?
When you have dozens of mods enabled, they can interact in unexpected ways, so I can't say that it definitely doesn't matter where you put Prepare Carefully in the load order, but in principle it shouldn't matter too much. When we're testing the mod, we usually put it at the bottom of the mod list.

How do I help you figure out which mod is causing the problem?
You'll need to experiment to figure out which mod is causing the problem. If you have development mode enabled, you'll likely see some clues about where the error is happening. If you figure out which mod it is, you can let me know, and I'll try to take a look. Unfortunately, a lot of times when I try to reproduce a problem, it works just fine for me--it's frustrating.

Which other mods don't work with Prepare Carefully?
We're always trying to make Prepare Carefully compatible with as many other mods as possible, but with so many mods out there it can be difficult. Help us by trying to figure out which mods are causing problems and reporting it in the "bugs and issues" discussion.

No. I tried loading and saving with the same (minimalistic) mod setup. The head symbols don't match after loading. You can reload directly after saving and the issue still occurs.

well
im slightly off
I DO know of one cause of the change in the gene symbol
when your mods change the symbol breaks
this is fixed by loading the xenotype in the xenotype ui and resaving it with the new modlist
this one however
is a vanilla thing

everyone is reporting such issues with all the character editors
its definitely an oddity that not everyone has
ive not had it myself with any of the 3 creators
i do not have the context of what actually causes the issue though sadly
its ether a conflict no ones figured out
or all 3 of the mods have the same problem
No? You don't have the issue that custom genes/races have the wrong symbol (generic base liner head) after loading a preset? That's highly doubtful. I don't have a conflict. You probably just haven't noticed. Other people report colors and stuff getting loaded incorrectly. Anyway, the only way to fix the mismatching symbols is to re-roll all characters from scratch, so what's the point saving them in the first place?

I dont have that issue and neither do a lot of people. Sounds like you have a conflict.
It's good to use if you don't mind the preset files not saving/loading properly, which means you have to create all characters from scratch each time.

Can anyone explain to me, how has EdB become usable once again, because I do remember the fiasco about it breaking saves and what not. Lots of people kept reccomending character editor. So is EdB good to use now?

Alu 23 Aug @ 10:16pm
no its not
bradson himself the creator of FISH confirmed it was fixed years ago
the rw main troubleshooting pin is not updated cause I
yes ME
cant be bothered to rewrite it
all 3 of the pawn editors have pretty notable issues
but none are save breaking unless you use char editors def editor function
you can search "alu" the troubleshooter in rw main to see this same explanation
