Reason for separate power grids?
I've looked around a bit but not found too much concrete information -- beyond the prototyping phase for weapons, when they can apparently short out on you, is there any major reason to not just have everything on one big power grid? Can there be failures that cause zzzt-like events, or is this just to prevent your defenses from completely draining power from the rest of your base?

you don't have to, but its a good idea to make a net just for energy weapons, if there's a short circuit event you want it to happen on a fireproof net not the middle of a stockpile full of wood and chemfuel, you can divert power to the weapons system during raids from area's of the base that don't need it like lights, hydroponics, workshops, to maximise your sustained fire rate, you can also switch off the weapons to prevent manhunter packs destroying them

Makes sense! I'm using the RT Fuse mod to deal with short circuits on my main net, but it sounds reasonable for that to still be a threat on my massive high-power energy weapons grid.

I'm trying out the Parallel Power Grid mod to make the wiring easier.

Thanks!

you can use transformers and high voltage lines to split powernets, just have a transformer plugged into your ppc net then you can change the power distribution using the transformer at will

Oh, yeah, my problem was that there's not a clear route from the reactor to my killbox that doesn't hit other cabling. Would've had to rearrange all of my cables so that I could isolate the PPC/reactor/control consoles/tesla coil from everything else.

I've already been messing with the transformer so that I don't waste power on that grid when it's fully charged.

i like having a separate power grid just as a backup, like if you aren't paying attention and your main base's PPCs run dry, so now you're reactor SCRAMed because it isn't getting enough power, you can connect your defense PPCs to power everything long enough to get the reactor restarted
