MOCX Backstories
So I went digging into RM's MOCX mod's XComGame.int and found the backstories section. Since MOCX soldiers can now be captured, I thought it'd be fun to write some backstories for our favorite traitors.

Adding backstories to them is like adding backstories to RM hybrids - they have their own character template, eg:

[DarkGrenadier X2CharacterTemplate]
[DarkGrenadier_M2 X2CharacterTemplate]
[DarkGrenadier_M3 X2CharacterTemplate]

Replace 'Grenadier' with Specialist, Ranger, Sniper and PsiAgent.

These all have their own backstories, but RM's just copy-pasted the only one that's there multiple times for every single character template.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that there're backstories for 'Reclaimed' (recaptured Skirmishers/hybrids) in there too.

I'll start off with some of the tamer ones I whacked together, just to see if there's any interest:

;The Misguided
strCharacterBackgroundMale[1]="<XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> insists to this very day that he honestly believed that he was genuinely making things better for humanity. He spends his time alternating between crying in his cell and being ostracized by the Avenger's crew. The hybrids in particular, some of whom have lost friends to MOCX, seem to take a dark pleasure in reminding <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> of his current situation."
strCharacterBackgroundFemale[1]="<XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> insists to this very day that she honestly believed that she was genuinely making things better for humanity. She spends her time alternating between crying in her cell and being ostracized by the Avenger's crew. The hybrids in particular, some of whom have lost friends to MOCX, seem to take a dark pleasure in reminding <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> of her current situation."

;Will Betray ADVENT At The Drop Of A Hat
strCharacterBackgroundMale[2]="The son of a prominent ADVENT official, ever since he was captured by one of our teams, <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> has attempted, with incredibly limited success, to ingratiate himself with the soldiers and the Avenger's crew. Let it not be forgotten, however, that <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> made his choice to stand with ADVENT willingly. It's only a matter of time until he dies - in fact, we believe someone is already running a betting pool on how long it takes before <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> dies a darkly comedic death, the local Reapers turn him into dinner, the Skirmishers see what it's like to stick a ripjack into a human head or the Templars find out exactly what happens if you leave someone in a Void Conduit for a few days without food or water."
strCharacterBackgroundFemale[2]="The daughter of a prominent ADVENT official, ever since she was captured by one of our teams, <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> has attempted, with incredibly limited success, to ingratiate herself with the soldiers and the Avenger's crew. ;Not Fooling Anyone
strCharacterBackgroundMale[3]="<XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> claims to be sympathetic to the resistance's cause, and that he was making plans to leave MOCX before we got to him first. He is always hit with the same question: 'why didn't you leave sooner?' Considering his current position, nobody is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt."

She is always hit with the same question: 'why didn't you leave sooner?' Considering her current position, nobody is willing to give her the benefit of the doubt."

;So Much For The Rising Star
strCharacterBackgroundMale[4]="Before he ran into our enemy capture team, <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> fancied himself a rising star in MOCX, a firm believer in the supremacy of the humans who chose to bend the knee to the aliens. Now, <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> is nothing to anyone, a prisoner in a war without any rules whatsoever. Quite frankly, he should consider himself lucky the Avenger's crew hasn't just used him as target practice, assuming the ADVENT forces we fight on the next op don't."

Users are welcome to write custom MOCX stories in this thread.

Basic Rules:

- No profanity, racial or sexual content
- Your entry will be edited / twisted to my cruel will / or not even used
- Succesful entries may not be published for a while until the next update

Content Tips:

You can indicate dynamic content by the following: NAME - COUNTRY - HE/SHE - HIM/HER

e.g. "NAME famously betrayed HIS/HER COUNTRY during the invasion... "

Stories must be flexible to allow male/female and random nationalities.

Length: The story should be 4 - 8 steam lines long. Approx 80 words.

It is interesting that there are multiple tiers of characters so you can be role specific.

- Dark Grenadier

- Dark Specialist

- Dark Ranger

- Dark Sniper

- Dark Psi Agent

- Dark Reclaimed

Content I am currently seeking / please write for me:

- Interesting tales of working conditions and sacrificing morals while working for ADVENT

- Interesting interactions & dubious recruitment tales of former MOCX agents.

- Dark tales of ADVENT brutality & scientific pursuits, as either a bystander, facilitator or perpetraitor

I have created 5 new MOCX Dark Reclaimed stories.

EDIT: (Sigh) see below post.

--- 'Dark Fighting Pits'

[NAME] was part of an ADVENT platoon cleverly captured by Reaper forces using nerve gas. He awoke in the fighting pits of the infamous Reaper amphitheatre of [COUNTRY], destined to fight and die in gladiatorial combat for the entertainment of the insurgents. The horrors of the pit broke his mind, which in turn allowed him to experience true emotions of rage and fear for the first time.

[NAME] only survived thanks to the intervention of a lone anarchist who freed a vast number of his kind. Bitter and angry, MOCX welcomed him with open arms. All Reapers will die by his hands."

--- 'A Tragic Tale'

[NAME] was a Skirmisher haunted by the loss of his best friend, a fellow hybrid, to ADVENT recapture teams. The fact that said friend was the one to free him from ADVENT in the first place only added to his pain, and this led him to take great risks searching for her. Sadly, one day he probed to far and was reclaimed by MOCX. [NAME] does not even remember his friend's name now."

--- 'Blinded by Hate'

If it hadn't been for his clan's orders, [NAME] wouldn't be serving alongside MOCX right now. While he enjoyed his personal freedom with the Skirmishers, he took severe offense to XCOM's alliance with the Reapers. A bitter veteran of multiple firefights against the survivalists, [NAME] has seen many comrades fall against the Reapers.

Blinded by hate and disgusted with the Skirmishers, he voluntarily joined MOCX who so far have let him retain his independance, although he always carries a loaded firearm with him in anticipation of the inevitable betrayal."

--- 'Death of a Poet'

It's no secret that ADVENT sometimes manages to recapture freed hybrids and, for whatever reason, re-enslaves them instead of executing them before assigning them to various propaganda efforts such as the infamous MOCX. Once known as something of an oratory poet within the free hybrid community, the only words [NAME] speaks now are angry, hurtful alien lies spat at his former allies in battle."

--- 'An Empty Mind'

[NAME] loves war. Bred to fight, he revels in the purpose he was created for. Where others would flee, he boldly charges forth. This made him a seasoned combat veteran of the Skirmishers for a while, it also made it incredibly easy for MOCX to dominate his mind via psionics and reclaim him."

(Sigh) I misunderstood the Dark Reclaimed again didn't I?

So the backstory needs to be that they were ADVENT soldiers, turned Skirmishers, Reclaimed to MOCX, and then recaptured by you, the player once more??
Rylien 25 Oct, 2017 @ 4:45am
Yep.

Maybe adjust those backstories to explain why they've been re-freed by XCOM and, for the more hostile ones, explain why they're with XCOM. The Reaper ones I get, but the 'death of a poet' and 'binded by hate' have to be reworked to justify why they're even with XCOM again, because those two sound a bit too far gone.
Rylien 25 Oct, 2017 @ 4:47am
Also for the 'Empty Mind' one, I've got a different take on it:

[NAME] used to love war - the purpose he was bred for. Where others would flee, he boldly charged forth. He was a seasoned combat veteran, but also a hothead. MOCX was able to exploit this and reclaim him, permanently damaging his memory in the process of installing a new chip, and our removal of it didn't help matters. He still fights, and he still loves it, but he can no longer remember why.

Gladiator Pits edit:

[NAME] was part of an ADVENT platoon cleverly captured by Reaper forces using nerve gas. He awoke in the fighting pits of the infamous Reaper amphitheatre of [COUNTRY], destined to fight and die in gladiatorial combat for the entertainment of the insurgents. The horrors of the pit broke his mind, which in turn allowed him to experience true emotions of rage and fear for the first time.

[NAME] only survived thanks to the intervention of a lone anarchist who freed a vast number of his kind, but during the escape, he was separated from the rest of the group and ran into a MOCX capture team. Despite our freeing of him, he blames the Reapers - and most of the resistance - for his extended suffering. Only fellow hybrids can calm him down long enough to focus his rage against our enemies.

Tragic Tale variant:

[NAME] was a former Skirmisher liberation team veteran who was captured by MOCX during an engagement with the hybrids at a Skirmisher camp. We only just recently recovered him/her from MOCX. S/he still struggles to remember who she was and what she used to do for the Resistance - MOCX isn't known for its hospitality - but the Skirmisher contingent aboard the Avenger has taken to helping her readjust.

Blinded by Hate variant:

If it hadn't been for Betos' orders, [NAME] wouldn't be serving alongside MOCX right now. While he enjoyed his personal freedom with the Skirmishers, he took severe offense to XCOM's alliance with the Reapers. A bitter veteran of multiple firefights against the survivalists, [NAME] has seen many comrades fall against the Reapers.

Blinded by hate and disgusted with the Skirmishers, he voluntarily joined MOCX - but they proceeded to re-enslave him. He still hates Reapers and the Skirmishers, but now he understands that the only way he will retain his freedom is to stand with the Resistance. NOTE FROM CENTRAL: I recommend we keep a very close eye on [NAME]. He's not exactly shy about telling the Reapers and Skirmishers about his opinions of them. It could get ugly.

---

Just something else to note - just my personal headcanon but it might be different from what you have in mind about the hybrids:

I always thought that all the hybrids were pretty much part of the Skirmishers, whether that be actual Skirmishers or just RM's hybrids. That's why I'm using terms like Skirmishers and hybrids pretty interchangeably. For me, I just copy paste all the Skirmisher backstories to the RM hybrids one because IMO it makes more sense that way. Up to you though.

I have had some better luck with some Dark Psi entries. I will rework the Dark Reclaimed shortly before updating.

--- Dark Madness

[NAME] had been a loner for a long time. He had shut out society and any contact to the 'outer world' to live in harmony with nature in the wilderness of [COUNTRY], away from the worries of the world. But as often is the case, isolation breeds some sorts of higher senses - what some might call 'madness', and others 'genius'. As [NAME] broke out of his self-made prison and joined MOCX, he showed them just how fine the line between both can be. This one is dangerous, Commander."

--- The Dark Astropath

In the early days of ADVENT occupation before advancements in the technology, individuals carrying the gift would be utilized - against their will - as living relays to reinforce the Psionic Network in weaker regions of the globe. The process was incredibly strenuous, having resulted in the deaths of possibly hundreds of psionic subjects. [NAME] was one of these subjects, having been stored in a facility in [COUNTRY] for several months prior to nearly burning out.

After a period of recovery and honing of their potential, <XGParam:StrValue1/!FirstName/> was eagerly inducted into the MOCX initiative - a better fate by far - or at least he thought until we captured him."

---Dark Inception

Once, [NAME] was just a refugee caught up in an ADVENT assault on a resistance haven. While the local rebels were able to eventually fend off the attack, [NAME] was found to have been overwhelmed by an illusive Spectre and forcibly copied. While the clone was short-lived, the process irreversibly changed [NAME]'s mental state. He started exhibiting an increasing amount of animosity towards others; even individuals he had considered loved ones.

One night, [NAME] took off, using previously undocumented psionic powers on those who tried to stop him. Since recapture, [NAME] claims to have no memory of the last five years and keeps asking where his wife is. We haven't had the heart to tell him we have confirmed reports of [NAME] leading a MOCX assault against his former haven, resulting in many deaths, hers included."

--- The Dark Scarecrow

Taunted and bullied as a youth, [NAME] vowed to overcome his fears through the study of psychology and alien psionics. Kicked out of his university for exploring forbidden human psionic concepts, a life of poverty beckoned until a mysterious stranger recruited him for MOCX.

Now a frightening combatant to face, it's rumoured that [NAME]'s powers grow stronger in battle by enhancing and feeding off his enemies' fear. Block his abilites and he becomes a pathetic coward, begging us for his life upon capture. We've warned him that if he pulls any mind tricks on the crew then he gets thrown out of the Avenger mid-flight."

---The Dark VIP's daughter

Since capture, [NAME] has been evasive about what exactly her background was before she joined MOCX forces in [COUNTRY]. From initial conversations, it's clear at the very least she's had an extensive education and is psionically gifted. [NAME] has agreed to work with us in exchange for her liberty, although we will eventually need answers."

If you check the RM Hybrid section of the mod, that is exactly what I did, copy all existing Skirmisher entries. I swapped out all Skirmisher entries to 'the free hybrids' instead as my understanding is that they are two seperate communities.

Yeah I've seen that.

Also in Dark Scarecrow, 'get's' isn't supposed to have an apostrophe.

Great edits for the Dark Reclaimed, I'm using all of them.
Rylien 25 Oct, 2017 @ 8:30am
Just my personal headcanon: MOCX soldiers are arrogant, self-entitled cowards, so if that's how the backstories I write for non-Reclaimed come across as that, it's intentional. They are Dark Collaborators, after all - they have no reason to want to give up their cushy lives to join the Resistance unless they're captured.

Psi Agents may be a little murky - could be ex-Templars captured and enslaved Reclaimed-style, or like the Dark Astropath.

So I've made about 3 backstories for each class, so this might be a massive post. I'm writing them with the context that the bios were made after they were captured

DARK GRENADIER

-----------------------

Needlessly violent and lacking in any concern for collateral damage, it's no surprise that [NAME] had received access to some of the heaviest weaponry MOCX has to offer. Having served as a military demolitions expert in [Country] prior to ADVENT's occupation, [name]'s pre-MOCX assignments had resulted in near-total destruction of the mission sites he/she had been deployed to.

Being captured and detained by XCOM certainly seems to have sobered up his/her attitude, although some trigger-happy streak remains, eager to pull the pin. Most likely, [NAME]'s loyalty to ADVENT and MOCX only extended as far as the toys they were willing to offer him/her.

-----------------------

[Name] carries a strength you wouldn't be able to discern from a single glance; he/she had managed to knock out two of our own troops that had been assigned to watch over him/her once he/she awoke, threatening to invoke further assault unless XCOM agreed to return him/her to the nearest city center. Further negotiation helped stabilize [NAME]'s temper. Although skeptical, [NAME] is willing to offer XCOM a chance were it to mean a better, brighter future for humanity.

-----------------------

After some tense discussion between Central and [NAME], we managed to discover a reasoning behind his/her association with MOCX; two of [NAME]'s siblings had allegedly fled to join the resistance and were subsequently killed in an attempted incursion on a Gene Therapy Clinic. Believing the resistance to have 'corrupted' his/her relatives, [NAME] had signed on with MOCX as one of their heavy weapons specialists.

Running the names of [NAME]'s siblings through our databases revealed that the relatives in question had both attended the Gene Therapy Clinic they had allegedly attacked prior to their disappearance, with no evidence that they had ever departed the building after their arranged gene treatment sessions. Further discrepancies in the presented information - including the fact that their bodies were burned beyond recognition despite the lack of serious fire damage within the clinic - promptly triggered an epiphany within [NAME]. After a night spent drowning in drink at the bar, [NAME] promptly sworn his/her allegiance to XCOM and the resistance the very next morning.

-----------------------

DARK SPECIALIST

-----------------------

[NAME] had initially served as a combat engineer in [Country]'s military before the invasion. When the government surrendered, much of the remaining military force was repurposed to an early pre-hybrid peacekeeping corps or - in cases such as [NAME]'s - assigned to help research better integration between human and alien technology.

Failing to find satisfaction with toiling away for hours in an ADVENT laboratory, [NAME] requested a reassignment to MOCX with the hopes of seeing some action on the field. Now in XCOM custody, [NAME] agrees to cooperate if it means he'll/she'll receive a less severe punishment for collaboration once earth is liberated.

-----------------------

[NAME] has been belligerent and indignant ever since he/she regained consciousness aboard the Avenger. While initially claiming to make the attempt to switch sides, our cameras show [NAME] skulking around Shen's workshop and the maintenance areas - often in the dead of night - seemingly trying to find vulnerabilities in the craft to take advantage of.

Bradford Note: Keep all eyes on this one.

-----------------------

The initial medical scan of [NAME] showed a bewildering anomaly: a small, orange-sized foreign object had been inserted close to his/her heart. [NAME] denied any knowledge of ever receiving surgery to receive any alien implants and immediately requested that XCOM attempt to remove it. The resulting operation was successful, but further analysis of the object lead to a disturbing conclusion.

Unbeknownst to [NAME], ADVENT had planted a remotely-triggered explosive device within his/her system. Why it had not yet detonated is unclear, but the microbomb was likely intended to neutralize [NAME] in the event of capture due to being privy to numerous MOCX secrets. Horrified, [NAME] is now more than eager to assist us in any way he/she can.

-----------------------

DARK RANGER

-----------------------

Once a heavily-dedicated loyalist, [NAME] recalls a time where ADVENT was a genuine force of good for the world.

Atleast, according to himself/herself. Ever since his/her detainment, [NAME] has devised a theory that a corrupt faction of ADVENT officials have been plotting to steadily overtake the Elder's agenda with the intent of worldwide dominion and dictatorship. While this appears to be a coping mechanism after having been informed of the crimes committed by ADVENT and MOCX, [NAME] hopes that ADVENT may continue to exist in some form after the resistance takes back earth as a benevolent organization, so that they may 'return to what they used to be'.

-----------------------

[NAME] has been a total wreck ever since his/her capture. A military veteran from before the invasion, [NAME] was forcefully conscripted into MOCX after his/her entire family had been arrested and sent to an ADVENT Blacksite. [NAME] had been regularly sent small clips of his/her relatives in captivity with the threat of execution as a means of ensuring loyalty.

XCOM scans at the coordinates of the alleged blacksite show no evidence of any structures - ADVENT or otherwise - existing in the area or its surroundings. [NAME] isn't sure how to cope with the information, but it's clear where his/her loyalties now lie.

-----------------------

[NAME] was already on probation for breaking and entering; having repeatedly slipped into gated city districts intended to house high-ranking ADVENT servants so that he/she could utilize their amenities. When security forces closed in to apprehend him/her, they found him/her skinny-dipping in a private pool on the residence of a particularly influential ADVENT official, having ingested an exorbitant amount of alcohol.

Since then, [NAME]'s MOCX assignments have repeatedly placed him/her in particularly dangerous situations; likely as a means to try and off him/her without callously executing a soldier in a way that would arouse suspicion from his/her fellow operatives. It's dumb luck that his/her encounter with XCOM didn't end in his/her death.

Medical Note: Initial scans of [NAME] after detainment showed a higher-than-average blood alcohol percentage. Heavily advise monitoring of [NAME]'s activities when off-duty.

-----------------------

DARK SNIPER

-----------------------

[NAME] is a highly-disciplined mercenary that had only agreed to work for MOCX in exchange for ludicrous benefits.

Although evidently sore about losing his/her handsome paycheck and ADVENT-funded designer home, XCOM has already proposed a better deal: [NAME] helps defeat the aliens, [NAME] gets his/her pick of whatever they leave behind.

It took a day of consideration, but [NAME] has agreed to the terms; Alien Alloys go for a pretty penny.

-----------------------

[NAME] woke up almost immediately after being bought onto the Skyranger. He/She explained that he/she was enthusiastic to join 'the winning side', but made a request to stop by his/her home on the outskirts of one of the ADVENT-controlled cities in the region in order to retrieve some personal effects. Although confused, Central and Firebrand tentatively approved the detour.

[NAME] eventually returned with two cats in tow; his/her pets. Clearly breaking ADVENT laws on domesticating animals of any kind, [NAME] wished to ensure their safety with an old friend that was now operating in a resistance haven. Once both trips had been accomplished, [NAME] pledged allegiance to XCOM with zero doubt in his/her mind.

-----------------------

While still somewhat loyal to MOCX, [NAME] does not show a similar affection towards aliens.

[NAME] firmly believes that all extraterrestrial forces on Earth discriminate against humanity and intend to turn the global population into a servant race. [NAME] had hoped that joining MOCX would eventually kickstart his/her political career, with the goal of negotiating a means to put humans on equal footing with the other species that form the ADVENT coalition. After being informed on what the Elders intend to do, [NAME] quite bluntly stated that he/she isn't going to bother with his/her aspirations anymore.

-----------------------

DARK PSI AGENT

-----------------------

Psionic scans of [NAME] reveals that MOCX has been employing outdated, unsafe techniques to improve and bolster their operative's psionic abilities; based off Dr. Vahlen's own initial research ventures into psionics during the invasion, recovered by the aliens after the attack on XCOM HQ. Initially displaying signs of severe mental fatigue and a mystifying addiction to elerium flakes, [NAME]'s condition steadily stabilized as he/she acclimatized to XCOM's own Psi program.

Medical Note: It's good that we recovered [NAME] when we did. If he/she had been operating under MOCX any longer, their practices would likely have killed him/her.

-----------------------

[NAME] believes himself/herself to be little more than a psionic weapon. He/She had been raised from birth alongside numerous other children in an ADVENT facility as part of an experiment to instill more powerful psi capabilities in humans. Many of the subjects had perished and were quietly transferred to blacksites as part of early progress into the Avatar Project. The few that survived were enlisted into MOCX as part of their psionic taskforce.

Disturbingly lacking in the emotional - or even sentient - department, [NAME] only now fights alongside XCOM because he/she had been instructed to follow whoever is in command, regardless of allegiance.

Central Note: '[NAME]' is actually the name of a cartoon character from a children's film; one of the few personal belonging that [NAME] had been allowed during his/her confinement. As far as we know, none of the test subjects were ever granted actual names.

-----------------------

[NAME]'s psionic potential was discovered after a visit to his/her local Gene Therapy Clinic. Having not even knowing that Psionics were an actual concept, MOCX coveted [NAME] and convinced him/her to join as a 'Psionic Weapons Specialist', tricking him/her into believing that the Psi Amp is the source of the psionic energy.

Once [NAME] discovered that these superhuman feats were his/her doing all along, he/she became distressed. The grief soon turned into resolve, with the intent of taking down the individuals who had lied to him/her about the gift.

-----------------------

DARK RECLAIMED

-----------------------

[NAME] had actually broke apart from ADVENT control early on, but willingly stayed on to indulge in a newfound independence that laid way for senseless cruelty towards humans; having believed that hybrids were superior by default. [NAME] practically relished his/her MOCX detail, using his/her position to abuse and torture human citizens and resistance members alike.

Momentarily transferred to the Skirmishers, Betos became disgusted by [NAME]'s cavalier, sociopathic attitude. Left with little choice, the Skirmishers had a majority of [NAME]'s memories erased or suppressed; the only way he/she could ever function as a valuable asset for the resistance. As far as [NAME] knows, the hybrid responsible for wanton savagery and violence is dead, hoping to make amends for his/her previous crimes.

-----------------------

[NAME] was noticeably disoriented after being pulled out of the Psionic Network a second time; he/she had been recaptured by ADVENT after several years of service under the Skirmishers and was placed back in ADVENT control, lead to believe that he/she was still a free agent of the resistance the entire time.

In any case, [NAME] hopes to make up for lost time. And hopefully, try and replicate some of his/her more heroic accomplishments that had been completely imaginary.

-----------------------

The Skirmishers had assumed [NAME] to be dead after having been separated during an operation gone awry in a Lost-infested city. That was until his/her unexpected resurgence as a MOCX Operative.

[NAME] had apparently suffered a severe concussion while fleeing from The Lost - losing a significant portion of his/her post-skirmisher memory in the process - and soon awoke with the belief that he/she had been kidnapped by resistance agents and had narrowly broke free. [NAME] was eventually discovered by a Purifier Squad and was returned to the closest ADVENT Command Post, where he/she was soon transferred to MOCX.

Provided with evidence of his/her tenure as a Skirmisher, [NAME] was surprisingly quick to regain his/her memory, rejoining his/her brothers and sisters with significant gusto.

Some great writing, thank you.
These will be included in V5.2 update coming next week.

A Dark Psi backstory probably ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but I think its interesting:

Dark Templar:

Apparently involved with a schism within the templars [NAME] was recruited into MOCX to aid in operations against them. He/She claims to have been using his "allies" in order to further his/her own dark crusade against the Elders. When questioned about his/her methods he/she often speaks in cryptic phrases such as "Burning Down the Akashic Records" or "Spreading Miasma throughout the Noosphere" and at one point "Opening up a portal to the Abyss" "The Elders will feast upon the Flesh of God and find it rotten and full of maggots!" While [NAME[ clearly resents the elders, we should keep an eye on him...who know what he/she will do if we aren't careful.
