The Fate of Zero to Hero (TL;DR expect ZtH 2.0)
Greetings! Making a state of the mod address to detail out what all is going to happen.

EDIT 2/17/2018: Due to a rather painful mishap, Zero to Hero is deader than dead today. File recovery only got me a fraction of the files present in the current version. This also means the current state of the project cannot be made open source since the files aren't there or have corrupted.

PART 1: TLC

Zero to Hero already had a backlog of existing issues to handle which has been magnified by the TLC Pass and it's only going to grow larger with more TLC updates. The assumptions that Zero to Hero was built around aren't as relevant anymore. Frankly the recently TLC'd creatures make my counterparts look like chumps now (Sabertooth aside), and that's for the better. It means that the vanilla creature has a proper niche as is.

PART 2: Retroactive Conversions

The window for setting up retroactive conversions (where creatures will naturally shift from their vanilla to their mod counterpart on mod install, and shift back on uninstall) has long passed, as learned from talking with the Better Dinos mod author, Kraken:1, who also has Better Mammoths, Damn Dirty Apes!, and more under his belt.

If there's a way to do it after release, it is lost on Kraken & I. The way he explained it was that it works by giving naming the custom creature the same blueprint name as the vanilla counterpart. Renaming my creatures now to drop the 02h_ prefix would wreak a lot of havoc.

PART 3: Lol is u ded[cdn.funnyisms.com]

Old fashioned burnout is what has slowed down the communication and update frequency, having been pretty much non-stop chugging away at the mod since the beginning of summer last year.

PART 4: Overspawns

The overspawning might be a corruption of my dev kit. I'll see if a fresh install of my Dev kit (after backing up my project and its tertiary files!) does anything. If nothing else, it's a variable worth testing that doesn't require directly tampering with mod files. Overspawning is not an easy issue to fix at the scope it has reached in Zero to Hero.

PART 5: What's next

Broken fliers has a known fix, so that will get pushed ASAP since it's so glaring and so hideous. For now, just getting critical bugs handled is the focus in light of the longer update lapse. Balance updates already planned will be in the mix.

PART 6: The fate of Zero to Hero

With Aberration and TLC Stage 1 giving painful reminders that core-code is always subject to change together with newer creatures becoming much more deeply involved, copying creatures, updating scripts, and wholesale replacing vanilla with custom is a lot less practical and sustainable than it once was. That becomes a constant source of woe when mixed with Zero to Hero's TC-like nature.

What I am ultimately looking to do is develop a spiritual successor mod loosely titled “ARK: TLC+” which takes into account what I've learned and what changes the TLC passes bring to make the core appeal of Zero to Hero more sustainable by relying on “Additional Default Buffs” when possible so that the vanilla creature doesn't need to be replaced, and hence the creature will stay updated.

PART 7: Tertiary elements

For creatures that were completely reworked, like Giganotosaurus, Triceratops, Diplodocus, Sabertooth, etc, those will become additional creatures in TLC+ rather than replacing their vanilla counterpart, unless by some miracle my counterparts more or less become official.

Custom creatures of Zero to Hero, like the Elder/Ancient roster, Fairy Moth, Kryadon, etc, will be splintered into their own mod and given greater depth compared to what they currently are. The rebalanced/buffed player character will become a stand-alone mod.

Thanks for sticking with me, folks! Zero to Hero's been quite the experience for everyone involved, there was a lot learned both during the development and after it went live. But there are better, smarter ways to handle the core appeal of the mod that are proving more and more necessary with each successive update.

Can't wait to see where this goes! I'll definitely be stalking the store page for the new mod to come out. I hope that when it's released, we can get it back to the front page of the workshop.
Your vision for the game is awesome and it's unfortunate that the timing of some code reworks have hindered this mod's progress.. Keep at it and I don't think I speak only for myself when I say "Thank you for all your hard work to try and make this game as fun and balanced as possible!"

It's a shame that you ran into huge issues and lost a lot of stuff =( My condolensces on that (I would die if I lsot all my artwork on my harddrive for example). I will defeintely be looking for the future one you plan to do though!

Do you by change have an estimate to when you'll be able to get the revamped version of this mod done? I'm taking guesses that you'll end up needing to wait till all the TLC passes are done, but maybe I'm wrong?

It sucks as I was wanting to make all the files go open source & let anyone interested nose around at what I did & how I did it (and further crush all my delusions of competence as people point out better ways to do things, I had some very hack-ish script-work in there.)

For TLC+, I'm not gonna try and kick anything up before all the TLC passes roll out and see how the state of the game changes at the end of it all.

When I first setup Zero to Hero I was surveying the state of the game from about the exact midpoint between Scorched Earth & Aberration's release. The saber cat TLC pass gave a bad first impression of what was in store - climbing power and increased hide/pelt gathering power were both almost joke-level changes in my book, as hide & pelt are both practically granted resources once you reach the mid-game of Carnotaurus & beyond.

There was nothing to suggest the TLC pass proper would have anything close to the depth of what we've seen in Stage 1 alone. Direwolves & Procoptodons in particular got everything from Stage 1, and for Stage 2 Spinosaurus and Argentavis are looking like they're going to be clear-cut winners as well.

TLC+ will be a much lighter mod compared to Zero to Hero, both in download size and in scope. It will be pretty much about giving the clear cut losers of the game something to let them keep up with the winners if it needs something beyond what .ini edits can provide (damage and Effective Health Pool tweaks.)

The Total Conversion like nature of Zero to Hero meant it couldn't be left alone for more than a minute before something needed attention.

I really enjoy your mod and the features such as passive taming. do you recommend another mod to use in the meantime while you prep your replacement?

Immersive Taming really touches on that passive taming element with a much more focused and engaging system for it. If you've got a herbivore that is semi-tamed with this mod, it'll actually start following you around (but not taking orders since it's not completely trusting of you yet.)

I highly recommend that + Kraken1's Better Dinos.

Seconded to both. Although I've always appreciated your vision for a sweeping rebalance and clever inclusions such as the "livestock" dinos in Z2H (soon to be TLC+). Better Dinos doesn't necessarily take that approach, though I still did use both and just remapped the ini to the dinos of my choosing. :)

Not replacing is definitely the way to go to keep it alive.

@Jelly Are you going to add a system to transport tamed fishes via fish baskets or something else? The thing I wan't so bad is to have mantas and eels and other cool stuff in ponds by my base. Also if it's not too troubling it could be an interesting idea to add a transport tank that needs to be filled with water with a water output thing that you can build in varying sizes. It would be the same thing as a fish basket but would bigger sea dinos and can be placed on the back of platform saddles. Just a sugestion I hope you consider because I love this mod and hope to see TLC+ prosper upon release! Best of luck Jelly!:steamhappy:

Hopefully the next run will go longer, the only new thing I got a chance to see was the healing Lystro, but that was cute :)
