Driftwood
Help! Environment crashed and I can't recover it.
I got thrown about 20 feet below the ground, can look up and see the pod, driftwood, waves rolling in, but the sky/space above and below the ground is all black. Multiple reboots and restarts have not fixed this. It's as if my save file has been corrupted or something, even though I was not in the process of saving when this crash happened.

If I reload the origional Driftwood, not my saved version, it loads fine, as do any other environments I load, but every time I try to reload my saved Driftwood environment, I am stuck in this black space under the ground. I have already spent so much time building and personalizing this environent and cannot stand to lose all my hard work. Is there any way I can somehow load a past save or anything? Help!

Vive Creative Labs, please respond and let us know what is happening and how it can be fixed. This is a serious problem. If people begin building in this world and will just have thier saves suddenly destroyed, perhaps Driftwood isn't quite ready for release.

Ouch that sounds awful, so sorry it's messed up your save. We tested as thoroughly as we could but sometimes things like this happen, particularly with the saved environments becoming corrupted. We're looking into this issue, along with a few others that have popped up.

Thanks for responding.

Is there an older version of my saved file that I can revert back to? I have over 15 hours of building and personalizing the space, as I've really made an effort to create something special. I'd like to recover as much of that as possible. Is there any way?

If not, when would it be considered safe to even try and rebuild? How will we know when you have a stable build that we can work with? The last thing I want to do is rinse and repeat at this point.

For anyone else reading this, be careful, maybe hold off on investing too much in personalizing the environment until a more stable build is confirmed. Or at least go into it knowing that you might lose your save at any time.

Driftwood is one of the neatest things I've experienced in VR lately, and I wish you continued success. I look forward to hearing more about how things progress.

I wanted to pass along a little more information. Using Advanced Settings, I was able to artificially move myself back up to the ground level. It looks like my save was replaced with a very early build. The pod is there but empty except for the built in shelves and bed, plant and that landscape picture, there is no door or door controls, there are no props around either. Also, the stakes that are in the ground to project the steam boards are there, but no panels, and the sky/background is all black.

I wonder why this last time when it threw me in the ground it reverted to this early build and everything else disappeared?

Is there any chance a recoverable copy of my previous save is stored somewhere?

What you’re seeing is not an earlier build it’s a corrupted save file. All the objects are there but have been reset to the world origin at 0,0,0 (hard to see). We’re still looking into this but all signs are pointing to it being an issue that can sometimes occur in Steam VR Home which we did not write. It might be something Valve has to look at ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the clarification.

When mentioning the issues I was having in Driftwood, someone recently posted that there was a bug with Steam VR Home relating to teleporting..."teleporting twice quickly when your first teleport would work but your second would not usually sends you to the center of the map." They said this could be recreated by spamming teleport in any of the environments. Perhaps some issues are tied into this, as I was thrown through the floor many times, but until this last time, my save was never impacted.
