Wulfhart's guys are explorers / hunters and thus much more adaptable to their surroundings, while Sudenburg and Bregonne are just regular guys in a bad spot.
Also CA always makes far too many changes to make the campaign easy for their playable factions, so I won't go down that path too. For example they even change which settlements in a region are the capital from what it was in the past and is really supposed to be, just so their playable faction starts in a capital, far too easy a start as well.
