I can't leave a dungeon once I enter
I went through many MANY rooms and I could never get back to the tavern am I missing something or was my game bugged?

No, same happened for me.
In order to go back to the tavern, you need to defeat or flee from the final boss. (if fleeing is right, I don't know.) Also, I saw an "easy door" in the editor. I think you get a choice over the boss or not. I don't know.
