Thanks. Next will be lumbering Rhino Mastodon (should upload in like a day) and then I hear some electric sparks at the horizon. Must be nothing, probably just white noise.

Jes, probably just white noise...

Eh, it looks more like an Actual Wendigo than a Xenomorph.

Ahh, I see what you did there

I'm glad you're continuing to work on these. I think the Nyx Carnifex is one of my favorite looks in the game, and I'd love to see this turn into a full series, like the Graxx line ended up.

Nyx one was actually a reference to the Tyranids from Warhammer 40k. The aesthetic is incredibly similar, they have "mind control units" and they have a bioform named the "Carnifex"
EmberStar 8 Jan, 2018 @ 9:38pm
I kind of doubt that it's a Tyranid reference. For one thing, I believe Games Workshop is kind of famous for being very litigious, and willing to sue at the drop of a hat. Also, the Tyranid "mind control" units would mostly be Genestealers. The Tyranid Carnifex is a tank/siege beast that's bigger than some buildings, and mostly takes heavy artillery to kill.

Carnifex happens to be a name that is applied to a number of real creatures, both living and extinct. A large number of them are various kinds of beetle. I'd assume the "Carnifex" is a reference to those, not the Tyranids. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnifex

It's not a direct Tyranid reference, but my Nyx was definitely inspired by both Tyranids and aliens, as well as rhino beetles. For some reason, I periodically get complimented for "good fish-themed skin".

Carnifex, though, is a real world word, which I took from some species of bugs I found. Wasp species, I think, same as my previous work, Ampulex. Games Workshop cannot trademark real world words.

Weirdly, comic books apparently can. Pretty sure Marvel has gone after people for using the word Wolverine. :P

That's pretty silly. Possibly only thing that would be sillier than this, is Marvel suing actual wolverines for being called wolverines.

I'd love to watch this, actually. Even staged.

I'd need to look up the exact citations, but before they got purchased by Disney, Marvel was in the news more often for their lawsuits than for their comics.

I know they went after the MMO City of Heroes just because it was theoretically possible to kind of duplicate the look of certain Marvel characters in the costume creator. (I'm pretty sure it turned out the only people making full Wolverine clones were Marvel employees though.) CoH banned a ton of words from character names as a result though. Including a huge number of fairly common animals.

I think they also tried to sue Pixar over the Incredibles, claiming that a super hero family with a strong guy, a stretchy hero, and a female who could turn invisible and make forcefields was clearly a violation of their many trademarks and copyrights on the Fantastic Four.

Oh no! Not Pixar!

Anyway, I guess that's all off topic. Thank you for making these, and I'm hoping to see all of them in-game. I just noticed your Volt, which is also nice. I'd love to see where you go next. (Of course, I'd also love to see your versions of my favorite frames next, but that's another topic entirely. Since I can't afford to commision you though, I'll just have to wait until you get around to them. But if you *wanted* to do Mag next, that'd be amazing. :) )
Vulbjorn 9 Jan, 2018 @ 10:01am
I'm afraid next one will be Loki, right after I finish and publish my infested Khopesh and "hive-carapace wings" syandana. But eventually I'm planning to do all frames, so Mag is definitely on the table, and the more I learn modelling, the faster I work.

Thanks for compliments, though.
