Suggestion: Deep Mine
Pro's and con's as compared to regular quarry.

Pro's:
- Never "run out" of stone
- Smaller physical structure
- Rarer materials
- Greatly increases mining skill

Con's:
- Require additional things to set it up (elevator shaft, first aid)
- Would need an electrical connection
- Colonists may get injured from cave-ins or falls
- Long-time mining may cause colonists to develop asthma.

For this, it might even be better to create a mineshaft which colonists disappear into while mining underground. I wanted to make a mod like that from the start, but didn't have the skill to tackle it. I might just try to do that for the next release!

That's what I meant, with colonists disappearing into it and returning with some materials. However to balance it out there should be a chance of injuries as stated in the OP. Real-world coal miners can actually develop asthma because coal dust can build-up in their lungs.

I am absolutely hopeless at scripting, but I have a few ideas on how to achieve the functionality.

Oxygen masks/respirators to prevent asthma? Mining tools made out of different materials and of different quality that affect the, well, mining outcome? cave ins and earthquakes? Too many ideas, maybe, but whatever.

"- Colonists may get injured from cave-ins or falls" This can even go to the extreeme where a cave-in can trap colinists, and othere need to dig them out, and based on the severity they will run out of air and food. But in the same thought, that might be taking it too far, but I like the idea of risking your colonists' life for materials.

On top of idea and to necro this but you could stumble upon ancient dangers aswell unwittingly minding an old crashed ship or some such
