I picked up the node and re-placed it. My batteries were already charged (by this same node) and I ran a batch. The AA system pulled everything out so I put it all back in, batteries flat. I've been watching it now for a while and caught it at 4500. It got to 5000 then switched to "charging batteries". The charge went down to zero and it switched to "reactivating station" but the batteries remain uncharged.

edit: OK, I've found that if items are in the charge node, even full batteries, it restarts the charge cycle.
edit2: After doing 2 productions, I emptied it and it's now just cycling the charge back to zero.
