Level 3 Teleporter room

I'm in a room with two revolving teleporters on level 3. There is a button on the far side but nothing happens when I hit it. I thought it would open the pit but it didn't so i'm kinda stuck there.

try putting an item into the empty cell on the opposite side, the buttom will teleport it down the far side to trip a pressure plate letting you progess
