Help/tutorial request for Csutom emblems
Greetings Tal'Kamar.

I am a big fan of your mod, love the quality of your emblems that look just like the ones in vanilla, keep up the good work.

Your mod have inspired me to create my own emblems, and I was hoping if you can share a tutorial or tips for creating the emblem, or what layers effects are needed in order to match the style of the vanilla emblems. Because i sware to god i am going to crush my head into the keyboard because i cant achieve the same effect after hours of trying.

I have manage to "copy" (the top part its always triggering me thou, too dark or to brilliant) the goldish color of the emblems but i cant seem to do the bevel part, its always wrong.

Thanks in advance and once again keep up the good work.

With regards,

Alexey

Hello Alexey,

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying my mod!

I'm using Photoshop CC, with the NVIDIA DDS plugin. In order to make emblems look like the default stellaris emblems.

To reproduce similar results, start by going through Stellaris' default emblems that are included with the game. Find the biggest emblems you can. I recommend looking for the tallest and then the widest emblem you can find. Use this to draw a square that is your paremeter. No emblem should go past the boundaries of this parameter. All emblems are 128px x 128px @ 72ppi. You can make some really high quality emblems with a higher resolution, but then they just won't fit in as well.

Once you have your parameter guidelines defined, you can then go about recreating the gradient used. You'll never get a 100% match, even mine aren't a 100% match. However you can get pretty darn close. Start by taking some color samples of an emblem every 13 pixels or so and saving them to your swatch pallet. From here go to create a new gradient and manually add each color in sequential order from your swatch pallet. It will take some playing around.

What I did was take the alpha (black and white channel) from one of the emblems and copied it over the RGB channel. Then I cut this new layer in half, leaving me with half of a white cutout of the emblem I was working with. I made my gradient from here, so I could see how it compared to the original as I was working.

I then made some small manual adjustments to the gradients top and bottom colors until it just looked right to me and that was it for making the gradient. Once that's done, you're pretty much in the clear, it's by far the most time consuming part.

There are only 3 blending options you'll need in total.
1. Bevel & Emboss
2. Gradient
3. Drop Shadow (All emblems have a very faint drop shadow.)

Hope that helps you understand my process a little better! Show off your work when you make some emblems! :)

Could you share your exact settings for the layer styles in photoshop?
