FAQ (Frequently asked questions)
Do you create more units for this mod? Do you update this mod?

No I don't plan to add more units at the moment. Yes I will update this mod in terms of optimizations, balancing and needed fixes.

Is this mod historically accurate?

The purpose of this mod is to offer you a wide selection of detailed units historically inspired by famous sources of great inspiration. Also the AOR version of this mod contains the AOR (Area of recruitment) system by Swiss Halberdier. In this AOR version we tried to be as historically possible as we can be to assign the units to their historical regions related to the Attila game engine.

Where do I need to install the mod if I want to install it manually?

You can manually install the Romani Units Pack - Normal version or the Romani Units Pack - AOR version into the normal Attila data folder here and then activate it within the Attila Mod Launcher.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Total War Attila\data

Where are the mod files installed after subscribing to Steam?

The subscribed mods will not be anymore installed into the normal Attila data folder since the last Attila Mod Launcher patch.

Romani Units Pack - Normal version

The normal version will be installed here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\325610\1310207928

Romani Units Pack - AOR version

The AOR version will be installed here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\325610\1322135339

Is this mod compatible with other mods?

Normal version:

It is compatible with other vanilla units mods, miscellaneous mods, gameplay mods and graphical mods.

AOR version:

It is compatible with other vanilla units mods, miscellaneous mods, gameplay mods and graphical mods.

The AOR version is not compatible with other mods which change the important campaign files startpos.esf of the main campaign and “The Last Roman” DLC campaign. Big overhaul mods change these special startpos.esf campaign files. If you are unsure if your other used mod changes these files, then please ask the related modder about it.

Both versions:

Both versions contain the database table "*_factions" which is used for the Attila Custom Battle Crash Fix. Big overhaul mods are using probably this database table.

Both versions contain the database table "*_fame_levels" which is used to change the related limits of the armies, fleets, agents and governors in all campaigns. Big overhaul mods are using probably this database table.

Both versions contain the database table "*_mercenary_unit_groups" which is used to optimize the recruitment of the vanilla mercenary units. Big overhaul mods are using probably this database table.

Both versions are not compatible with the Radious Mods as all units are already integrated there.

Is this mod save game compatible with my older save games?

Normal version:

It is fully save game compatible.

AOR version:

It is required to start a new campaign because of the startpos file campaign changes (WRE/ERE/The Last Roman). Your ongoing or old campaigns will not recognize these technical AOR changes. The AOR system will be loaded at the start of a new campaign.

Do I need to start a new campaign with WRE/ERE/Roman Exp.?

Normal version:

It is not needed to start a new campaign and you can use it with your ongoing campaign. But I recommend to start a new campaign if you didn't start a new campaign since the last Attila patch (February 2016).

AOR version:

It is required to start a new campaign because of the startpos file campaign changes (WRE/ERE/The Last Roman). Your ongoing or old campaigns will not recognize these technical AOR changes. The AOR system will be loaded at the start of a new campaign.

Why can't I see any unit names?

The names of the units appear automatically if you play the English version. You can switch your language in the Steam options of Attila.

All other languages need the related language file here:

Did you remove or change any vanilla Roman units?

No the vanilla Roman units haven't been changed or removed.

Does this mod change any core game elements?

This mod doesn't change anything related to economy, diplomatics or events which could happen. It doesn't change the vanilla units balance. It only changes the fame level system of the factions and increases the chances with which it is possible to recruit the vanilla mercenaries. If you use a gameplay changing mod which changes the vanilla units, then the effects of this gameplay mod will take effect.

Fame levels changes related to the factions in all campaigns

DB Table: db/fame_levels_tables/romani_fame_levels

The limits have been increased related to the 8 fame levels of the factions in all campaigns. (Main campaign / The last Roman DLC / Age of Charlemagne DLC)

I added below the basic vanilla values how they are in the vanilla game and my new changed values how they are used in the mod. You can find these details in the special Romani Units Pack Excel Guide too.

Vanilla mercenaries recruitment chances increased

DB Table: db/mercenary_unit_groups_tables/romani_mercenary_unit_groups

The chances with which the vanilla mercenaries will be available for the recruitment in certain provinces has been increased.

Can I use this mod even if I didn't bought the "The Last Roman" DLC?

Yes you can use both versions of this mod even if you didn't bought "The Last Roman" DLC. But you can only play the campaigns and custom battles with the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. If you didn't bought the "The Last Roman" DLC, then you can of course not choose the releated campaign or the related faction in the custom battle screen.

Are there any unit limits?

Yes we set the following basic units limits in the custom battle screen and the campaigns:

Tier 1 = no unit limit
Tier 2 = 20 units
Tier 3 = 15 units

Some units do have other unit limits.

If you want to change or remove these units limits, then please read my tutorial How to customize the mod.

Where can I recruit the Roman units and what are the building requirements?

Normal version:

In the normal version all units are recruitable in all regions if you built the required buildings.

AOR version:

In the AOR version all units are only recruitable in their specific AOR region if you built the required buildings.

I made an extensive Romani Units Pack Excel Guide which covers even more information about the units, the building requirements, fame level changes and it contains a complete overview of the AOR system and a tutorial how to customize the AOR system. The file is available in the downloads section.

Table: Romani_Assignments
Features a complete overview about all unit-to-factions relations, where you can recruit our units and the units limits.

Table: Romani_Buildings
Features a complete overview with which buildings you can recruit our units.

Table: Romani_Fame_Levels
Features a complete overview about the vanilla values and the changes in the mod.

Table: AOR_Tutorial
Features a complete overview of the AOR system, contains a tutorial about how to change the AOR assignments and shows all used and possible AOR values.

Is it possible to switch between the two mod versions after starting a new campaign?

No you can't switch between the two mod versions after you started a new campaign. You must use the same version with your campaign further. This is a technical restriction by Attila and I can't change this. But you can start another new campaign and use then the other version.

What does AOR mean?

AOR is the short word for Area of Recruitment. It is a specialized recruitment system which allows modders to assign units to specific regions in the campaigns.

Are there any custom units available to be recruited right at the start of the special AOR campaign in my starting armies?

Western Roman Empire

None units are available in the starting armies.

Eastern Roman Empire

Milites Primi Constantini
Milites Dacisci

Roman Expedition Forces “The Last Roman” DLC

Limitanei - Lykokranitai
Foederati Hunni
Socii Slavi
Voluntarii
Numerus Pharanitai

Does the AOR function work in the Expedition mode in “The Last Roman” DLC?

If a faction is in the Expedition mode (Last Roman DLC), then the AOR doesn't get recognized by the game and all units are recruitable everywhere depending on the Expedition buildings. This is a technical restriction by Attila and I can't change this.

If a faction is in the Empire mode (Last Roman DLC), then the AOR works.

What is the startpos.esf file which is included in the AOR version?

If a modder mentiones the startpos.esf files, then it means the important file which all campaigns need to set up the complete campaign system when a new campaign is started. Big overhaul mods change these files.

The starpos.esf files gets only loaded once if you start a new campaign.

Therefore if CA releases a new patch and they will update these files, then all players would have to start a new campaign that CA's changes apply in the campaign. And we modders must update our startpos.esf files according to CA's changes too.

How can I create a backup of my save games?

Create a backup of your save games before using unit packs. If you install an unit pack and then play a campaign, the IDs of the custom units stay in the save game. If you remove later an unit pack in your ongoing campaign, then the save game can't be loaded correctly if there are recruited custom units in the armies from you or the AI.

C:\Users\Yourname\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Attila\save_games

My game crashes and what can I do?
If your game crashes please try to re-download changed "vanilla" files and verify the integrity of the game:

> Open Steam > click on "My Games" > right-click on "Attila" > left-click on "properties" > then look for the "Local files tab" and click on "Verify the integrity of the game cache"

There you can re-check the integrity of your Attila files. It takes some time, but after updating you have again all proper vanilla files.

Please try the following too if the custom battle screen crashes. Please remove all files in these two folders below:

C:\Users\Yourname\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Attila\battle_preferences
C:\Users\Yourname\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Attila\army_setups

I included the "Attila Custom Battle Crash Fix" directly into both versions, so crashes due to too many units shouldn't happen anymore.

What should I report if I experience a crash or bug?

It helps me very much if you can be as specific as possible and please write the following report that I can help you better.

- Which version do you use? (the normal version or the AOR version)
- Where and when does the crash happen? (custom battle screen battle, campaign battle, after pressing the "End turn" button in a campaign)
- Which faction do you play?
- Which units are affected?
- Is this bug re-producable?
- Do you use any other mods? If yes then please try to de-activate them to see if the crash disappears.
- You can provide screenshots of your data folder and of the Attila Mod Launcher, that I see which mods are activated. The Attila data folder is located here:
C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\total war attila\data

Is this mod compatible with Radious Mod? Is it okay to use the normal and AOR version together?

If you use the Radious Mods, then you don't need to use this mod as all units are already included in the Radious Mods.

If you don't use Radious Mods, then you mustt choose between the normal or AOR Version.
