A Hat in Time

Time is Critical

Length & Death
Played this for about 3 hours. Got to the extremely annoying section where everything is shaking. Died. Lost everything. 0/10

Seriously, having to retrace hours of gameplay because you don't save the player's progress at certain points is...incredibly annoying.

I am very sorry for the irritation that my map has caused you. Things should only be shaking subtly for the player, was it too much? I could try making it shake softer. I would not want to cause anybody to become nausious.

However, I did include a feature that allows the player to respawn if they want from the level they died at. ( I included it because forcing the player to restart from the beginning is very punishing. )
Did it not work for you?

It worked, but it removes absolutely everything - all my rift pons, and all my storybook pages. The door even says it will "reset progress" but I didn't think it would take away every single thing that I collected prior to the checkpoint. I thought it would just remove things gained since the checkpoint.

Ah, well that is actually something hard coded into the game. It is not that it removes it, more like the only thing that is transfered when the player dies is what checkpoint they were on. I do not have any control over it. I am very sorry, I know it must be frustrating.

It is because Purple Rifts are supposed to reset on death, so they coded it to be that way.

In that case, the title of this thread is even more relevant... Is it possible to somehow break the mod up into sections? If the storybook can't be put into parts, what about using vault tickets instead and having them unlock a vault with the storybook pages at the end? I'm not sure exactly how far the mod goes beyond the shaking section, but if it's not too far then 3 sections should be enough - Mafia City, then prior to shaking, then shaking+.

It would of course be better if there was a way to retain the pages (rift pons aren't too important) through code, but since that's not possible, using Acts and vault tickets would do to alleviate the weight of the mod's length.

Even if I broke it up into sections, having the player get vault tickets would not change the fact that they do not transfer between levels either. Not that it matters since as I stated in the mod page, the storybook does not have anything at the end. I removed it once for that reason, but somebody wanted them to be added back in. (So I did, and stated that they lead to nothing.)

And I can make it shake much less if you prefer. I do not want people getting sick or irritated from it. I only intended to convey a "everything is wrong" feeling.

I may be able to do an act select at the beginning. But completely splitting the level into 3 would be a lot of effort to make work properly, so it would be more of a "choose your start point"?

Ah, that works! And it's a relief that there's nothing in the storybook, so next time I don't have to worry about it. Then again, Storybooks can be, like, just text instead of pictures... I don't think anyone's realized that yet, though.

As for the shaking, is it affected by the game settings thing that affects shaking? I haven't used that setting yet.

Well, I think that people would be expecting a storybook like in normal Hat in Time. So I think they may be disappointed if I make it an actual story. (Though it is certainly possible to do it.)

Alternatively, I can include little cheat codes similar to my cheat to make it to the final boss from the first level that I included in the mod page. That way I could quickly implement this and get back to work on my 2018 Halloween Contest horror map. (Since I do not know how to make an act select yet. I only know others have done it. (And learning how might take some time...))

There's a Halloween Contest?! Nice to know I'll have more mod levels to play!

And best of all, depending on how long your contest entry, you can probably use this same trick on it.

Thanks!

Since almost nobody looks at discussions, I can give you the inside information that it is not planned to be as long as this, and I am trying to make it completely co-op compatible. Also, since it does not have any rift pons, or storybook pages, checkpoints should work just fine to save the progress the player has made.

Between making the Halloween mod, a huge top secret project, and my new Niko Hat mod (released an hour ago), I have a lot of things to do. So I hope you do not mind waiting for a bit before I can update this mod.

That's totally fine. I've been needing to play a different game's beta anyway, so I'm not planning on coming back to AHIT for at least a month. I look forward to your new mods when I come back, and thanks for the hard work!
