Guild of Middlemen

You have to have Power Word Mediocre for plot reasons, so if you're lacking it, talk to the Magical Plot Fairy and get a new copy. Plot objects are going to be important for this module and the upcoming second campaign, so keep tabs on them!

Mutual Hatred

Make sure you exhaust Viscera's plot tree. He has some important story info. Then, approach the elf -- no matter how the conversation turns out, Sally will beam in, minotaurs will attack and the fight is on. The goal is to reach a cave at the top of the mountain.

The 'taurs and some of the higher powered elves can be a real pain here. If you can run fast enough you can lead them into each other -- Sally's forces will fight Vigil's forces, and you can leave them to deal with each other. It involves some tricky running, and you could get damaged along the way, but it is possible to jog straight up the mountain without killing anything except ones directly blocking your path.

Near the middle of the mountain are two structures of note. On the west side, a red illusionary woman who can tell you a little about Malevolent Keep, and provide you with a map (which will make it clearer where you need to go later). On the east side is a small cottage which has some of Sally's journals and other backstory information, and provides a good shelter from the war outside.

Once you get to the top, look around for a cave entrance. Duck inside and you're done.

Crossing Over

This area is largely optional. You could just stampede north, then follow the bridges east and then north to loop around to the northmost bridge which leads to the exit.

Subquest: However, if you like experience points, you can also talk to the tiefling near the entrance. She's got a subquest for you to pick up four objects from around this area. The bridges are a bit mazelike, and you'll hit a lot of encounters (primarily elves, but sometimes minotaurs and kaos fragments). Each object is in a stone tower on an island in the maze. Bring all four back and you'll net yourself 1500 XP (good to nudge your character into a level up before the real mania begins) and a token runestone, which will be used in the second campaign.

When finished, make your way to the northernmost bridge (entered from the northeast corner of the map) and on you go.

The Crusader's Last Stand

Okay, it's finally time to take down Vigil. He's not really too difficult, since he has no spells or abilities, but the minute you start fighting you can expect to be pegged from the left and the right by snipers and casters. If you're sturdy enough, kill Vigil, then go after one set of snipers, hide, rest, and go after the others.

Pick up the key that Vigil drops and you can enter the Keep.

Home Sweet Home

Head to the study immediately on your right. Read Viscera's journal to get the spell component list. Once you do that, the divining pool is activated and you can go ahead and drop the first component, Power Word Mediocre, into it by clicking on the pool.

Leave the living room area to the room of doors and portals. We'll take the northernmost door first. In the antechamber are more doors to bedrooms, storage areas, and so on... to the west is Viscera's smaller study, and in there is a chest containing two more spell components you'll need. To the northwest is a bathroom and a lot of water elementals, totally optional. North is Viscera's bedroom, which has a nice robe you can wear/sell, and some scrolls of ressurection that will be handy later.

East is Sally's room. Be ready to be attacked by her pet when you arrive. After that, raid the toychest by her bed for her dolly, the next spell component. (You can ignore the top and the skeleton knuckle.)

You can either go drop these items into the divining pool now, or do it all in one burst later, your call. Your next stop is the room to the south of the portal area.

Cold Storage

This map curves down to the southwest or southeast. (The room right to the south is an optional area with strong monsters.) Southwest is easier; southeast could be a little rough since it's got very strong bugs. Eventually both routes will loop around to an area where Dawn's held hostage.

Subquest: In the southwest corner of the map are two penguins with a puzzle so easy that if you need a spoiler for it, there's something wrong with you. Inside is a nice magical sword, guarded by Frost Giants.

Talk to Dawn; she'll mention a lever that'll open up her cell. Get ready for a fight, because once you start walking into the large room here, ogres will pour out of the woodwork to get you. Once they're read, throw the lever, and return to Dawn. Tell her about Vigil (for lots of fun, be a real bastard when telling her) and eventually she'll give you a bottle with her tears, the next spell component.

Return to the portal room in the house, and take the east door.

Dungeons and...

A torch or light spell would be nice here. Be ready to fight goblins and skeletons a plenty.

Archdean Spiro is in the northeast cell, but the switch to free him is in the middle row, east column cell. Step on the floor switch, then return and talk to him to net yourself Spiro's blood, the next spell component. Finding your way around here can be tricky due to the weird room shapes, so keep an eye on the map.

Subquest: In the southeast cell are a ton of hard goblins. One of them, when dead, will drop a Solitary Confinement Key. If you take this to the door marked Solitary Confinement on the western side of the prison, you can meet an NPC who will net you about 400 XP and a token useful in the second Penultima campaign.

When finished, return to the portal room. The last area to visit is to the east.

To Set a Snare

The switch in front of you will generate a weak Kaos Fragment, but don't do it yet... we're going to have to lead it around by the nose to a trap on the other side of the level, and if you bump into monsters you haven't cleared out, you may have to do it all over again.

Take either the east or the west course to get to the trap. The west course has more open areas, but stronger monsters; the east course has tighter, twistier spaces and slightly weaker monsters. Both eventually lead to the trap.

When your preferred route is cleared out, throw the switch on the generator, and let the fragment follow you around the map. Make it walk into the glowing trap, and it'll explode. Grab the Kaos Fragment Gem that is produced, the final spell component.

Return to Home Sweet Home, dump all remaining spell components in the pool, and you'll get The Third Option. Now you can go to the final battle through the yellow portal.

Elegia

Here's what should happen, barring any plot killing bugs...

After a brief scene with Sally, you can either ask her to leave while you deal with Kaos, or have her help you. Lower level folks will want the help; upper levels can try braving it alone. You can't control Sally like a full fledged henchman and she tends to be a bit trigger happy in the early fights, draining all her energy, but she can buff you pretty nice before she runs out of steam. She can live or die, it won't break the plot.

First Kaos will rise from the ground to the north, and you'll fight some upper-end goblinoids (ala Pest Control). Wipe them out, then you have a four second break before Kaos reappears to the east, bringing Slaads with him (ala Dewey's Decimal). Take them out, a break, then to the south he'll generate Tainted halflings. The final encounter is cows and death chickens to the west.

(If any of these encounters fail to spawn, wait until the combat music stops, then go click on the Kaos husk. It'll manually trigger the next one. Try as I might, the bug is completely random on different computers, and I couldn't do anything other than work AROUND it.)

Once all four encounters are cleaned out, the earth will shake, and you can now click on the Kaos husk in the center to win the game and end the campaign. (Everything else is just talking and dialogue. If you finished the two NPC subquests they'll have a few extra words for you here.)

Good work!

Just wanted you to know your topics are -slightly- mislabeled, since this is the original Penultima series, so it should be P2 P3 and P5, instead of PR2 PR3 and PR5.
